I am replacing a rear brake line, from the pump back, and there is a silver cylinder that the line goes into and comes out on located near the fuel tank. There is one on bothe lines....what is it?
It is a brake proportioning valve. Dealer only part.
Dude are you sure that is your brake line and not fuel line??
You are describing a fuel line....
If you are sure and it doesn't seem to serve any reasonable purpose, don't worry about it... as long as the brake line you are using is new and in good condition there really isn't anything to worry about.
Keep in mind you can use compression fittings and replace sections of line rather than replacing the entire line....

I'm having a problem with the same part. It's not a part of the fuel line. It's definitely a part of the brake lines running along the drivers side of the vehicle back to the rear wheels. Whatever they are, the ones on my girlfriend's 1992 Bonneville just rotted out and she lost her brake fluid while driving today. I need to replace them, but I am wondering if they are just a coupler, or if they are some kind of pressure regulating coupling. If they're just a coupler, I'll cut them out all together, and run a replacement length of brake line and flare some new fittings on.
