Under the bonnet is another fuse /power distribution box check inside this box for a corroded or burnt end on a wire also the window fuses will be heavy 40 amp or more ,looked in the handbook and as its a haynes its just pretty drawings with typical wiring diagrams but it shows the power distribution box as next to the battery .Last one i done was a problem with the wires from the door pilar to the door but you state you have checked this so if all else fails run a new feed wire to the central control in the door

  • Anonymous Dec 13, 2010

Thank you for your time. is the big light brown wire the feed in the harness?

Pontiac Montana 2004 drivers side power window stopped. Will not open. Can't find right fuse. Where is it?

It's not a fuse problem , all the other windows work ? One Circuit breaker powers all windows . Probably the window regulator is bad or the switch or the motor . Pull the door panel off the driver door an test the electrical circuits . Could also have wires broken inside the body to door flex joint (black rubber boot )
How To Diagnose your Power Window Problem Is the Switch or motor bad

Eletcric windows diagram

Window fuse's and relay's may be up under driver or passenger side dash or behind glove box, under the hood and even under the seats, and finally on the ends of the dash. All passenger power windows and locks are controlled thru and get power from the master control switch on the drivers door.

Drivers door window gets used the most so it could be the motor, window switch, relay or fuse.
Could also be a broken wire in the rubber boot going from the door to the body. You will have to eliminate each till you find the culprit. Check that all switches return to neutral when released.
The motor and the relay are the most likely to cause this problem. Try swapping the relay with a working window relay. If it still doesn't work, remove the door panel and remove the window motor.
Turn the motor shaft in both directions by hand several turns. Then plug the motor in and see if the switch will now run the motor. Sometimes that's all it takes to get it working again. I have had to do this with brand new motors. If voltage is not present at the motor connector, either a bad switch or a broken wire exists. Make sure to check for voltage coming to that windows switch. Actually, GM use's a circuit breaker type relay for each window and one fuse for all the circuit breakers. If you have a lockout switch it may be faulty.

Thats a pretty cool trick!!! Try this:

Try this....
Open the door, turn the key to the ON position without starting the engine and everything that makes noise is off. Lean down placing your ears close to the bottom center of the door or at the speaker grill. Press the window switch UP and DOWN. Listen for the window motor. If heard the drive is damaged. If not heard, turn key off and locate and replace the relay with one of the other window relays. Check window again. If it works now, get a new relay. More often than not, removing the motor and turning it by hand will get it working good as new. I have had to do that with Brand New motors! So try it.
If all has failed, with the door panel still off, check for voltage at the motor connector when pushing the window switch. No voltage means its the switch, especially if its a auto down or up switch.

None of my electric windows work. Checked the fuse. Could it be a relay?

There is no relay, and there is no fuse for the power window circuit, there is a 30 amp circuit breaker in the fuse panel under the dash and the circuit breaker should be marked WDO on the fuse panel.

First check to see if there is power from the 30 amp circuit breaker to the master window switch on the driver door, and if power is getting through the master window switch.

If there is power to and through the master window switch (use a test light or a power probe would the best tool for the job), then there is most likely a broken wire inside of the weather boot that is between the door and the body of the vehicle, and the wires run in from the door through the inside of the weather boot and then through a hole on the body of the vehicle that is located behind the driver side kick panel, and the wires should be inspected from the wire connector behind the driver side kick panel out to the master window switch on the driver door for any broken wires. If you do find any broken wires be certain that they are soldered back together and do not use wire connectors to repair the wire(s) unless you want to repair the system again in about a month or two.

Here are two wiring diagrams (if the vehicle has rear vent windows then use the upper diagram) of a typical GM power window circuit for that year to help assist you, and let me know if you require any further assistance.

Power windows and door locks don't work

Check fuses first, then check power window master switch. If old car check broken wires between driver door and body..
