P0042 : Heated oxygen sensor (HO2S)bank1, heater control -circuit malfunction.
The code is telling you one of the oxygen sensors or the wiring to it is faulty.
SOURCE: message system reads "engine system maintenance required"
WHAT HAPPENED IS WHEN YOU SHUT DOWN AND RESTARTED YOU (RESET THE ENGINE MANAGEMENT COMPUTER) AND THE SERVICE LIGHT SHOULD GO OUT AFTER 10 MINUTES OF DRIVING

mcdevito75 here, It could be a few things, Fuel filter, fuel pump, the need for a tune up, one of the engine control sensors going bad. Have your local shop run diagnostics.
SOURCE: spark plugs changed. but after reaching 40mph
check or replace the fuel filter. you may not be getting enough fuel to engine. does the car bog down now ! if so check fuel filter. check air filter also. are the plug wires on right! have a good day !!

Only one of the proposed answers is a viable solution. checking spark plug wires on a Volvo XC90 is a stupid answer...they run on coil packs. however, I will say that a bad coil pack code can get thrown if one of your plugs are worn out. ALWAYS check your plugs first before assuming it is a bad coil pack. This will cause this problem. Fuel pump on 04 xc90;s are now under recall.
If you are having surging problems the PCV canister may need to be replaced. This can cause idle surging. This is not an easy task to undertake and takes about three hours to do. For the sputtering and die problem the Electronic throttle module or TPS could also be bad. always check to make sure proper fuel delivery and ignition are working properly before moving to engine management controls. They usually are the simplest fixes. Use Achems Razor theory, the simplest solution is usually the correct one. so always best to check there first.
I wonder what the oil level is in the engine ?
