SOURCE: 1989 honda prelude enigne idles high then low irratic

I had the same problem on a Rover. There was a leak in inlet manifold that was caussing the problem.
To verify, spray some sealant to temporarily seal the inlet manifold .and the eratic idling should disappear for some time.
If it does, you know there is leak in inlet manifold which you can take of and refit with a new gasket.

SOURCE: low/poor idle

Here is what you need to do, a cleaning of the intake throttle blade and the idle speed control air-bypass valve, they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls) like yours,
Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake

SOURCE: 1997 buick lasabre custom high idle, transmission, stalling

had same problem i would check the Idel Air Valve and also check all of your vaccum hose lines makeing sure there are no cracks or splits in rubber connectors if there is repair immediatelt because over time they start to dammage the internal parts fo the engine and if youve replace tps mass air etc. sounds like a vaccum hose problem

SOURCE: engine knocking, valve ticking loud in engine, when idle or drivi

Make sure the oil level is good, and have the oil pressure check by a garage or someone who can, by using a external gauge to see what the actual oil press is. Low oil pressure will give you the ticking, start there.

2003 Ford Explorer XLT Wants To Stall At Low Idle,, especially when at a stop light

How does it idle in park , does it run ruff or smooth? Are any lights lit on the dash , check engine etc. ? Could have a partially plugged IAC air passage .idle air control (IAC) valve ! The engine computer uses the IAC to control idle , when under a load such as when put into gear the computer raises the idle ! It does this by allowing more air to by pass the closed throttle into the engine raising the idle ! If these air passages clog they restrict the air flow an cause a idle problem ! Now if it runs ruff at idle in park you could have vacuum leak ! Rough Idle How to Fix Ford Taurus Engine Stalls at Stop Signs

It starts but as soon as it's put into gear acts like it wants to go but quits.

Could be a few things. But here are the obvious. Check for a vacuum leak around the intake. When you put the car into drive it starts putting strain on the engine, a vacuum leak will give it too much oxygen and cause a fuel mixture issue / reading.
If nothing wrong there, you may have a bad throttle position sensor. When you put the car into drive and it starts putting strain on the engine it will pull the idle down then the sensor will adjust it automatically. Hope this helps.

What is wrong 95 BMW 318i starting issue and idle rough won't stat running?

Vane air flow (VAF) units are a common failure on these cars. It is the the sensor mounted inline on your intake tube that is aluminum and black plastic with a round twist plug. If you unplug it an it runs better that is most likely your culprit. The gentleman above is on the right track. Intake boot cracks/failures are quite common on these older cars too as are the EGR tubes/hoses - listen for air leaks/sucking noises.

The idle air sensor (IAC), made by Bosch looks like a small coke can with two tubes and a plug going to it. Sometimes they are hard to find/hidden under intake. They do go bad, but can usually be cleaned with car/brake cleaner. The internals should rotate; they are just an oscillating valve that regulates extra air to the intake.

You never said it it runs fine once it us up and going. If it does, it could also be a oxygen sensor. You should really consider having the codes read... it really shortens the list of parts to check!

Good luck!

I am looking at a hyundai that has a high idle when in park or neutral, but comes down to normal when in gear. The owner said that he put a cheap code reader on it and it said that it needed a chip for the...

There is no such part as a chip in the electronic engine control system or the automatic idle speed control system which is controlled by the systems computer (called the PCM. Let me explain how the idle speed control system works, there is a valve on the engine (called the Idle Air Control or "IAC") that passes a metered amount of air (creates a controlled vacuum leak) coming into the engine around the engine throttle valve, this metered leak of air raises the engines idle speed. The reason that the idle comes down when you put it in gear is that you put a load on the engine. The causes of a high idle speed are most often a vacuum leak at the engines intake or a vacuum leak due to a large vacuum leak elsewhere. The 1st thing to do here is check the intake for leaks, to do this get a bottle of propane and the torch adapter that goes on it, remove the screw off end from the torch pipe, and put a 2 foot length of rubber hose on it or plastic hose, start the engine and warm it up, then trun on the propane to a low flow and spray the gas around the top of the engine and listen for changes in the engines idle speed, if you find a vacuum leak you will hear the engine idle change. Repair the leak as needed.

look at replacing/cleaning: idle control valve, maf(mass air flow sensor) vacuum leaks: intake manifold or air intake system.

1989 ford bronco idles low and dies when stuck in reverse

Check the fuel pressure. If good, then see if there is vacuum leak with a vacuum gauge. If good take the idle control valve off and see if there is a lot of grim inside. Or it may be the mass air flow meter maybe bad. Try cleaning it with some mass air flow cleaner. See if it idles better with intake cleaner being sprayed in the intake with it running. First see if it runs a little better with the mass air flow unplugged. If so then the sensor is bad.

1989 pontiac firebird 305 v8 starts and idles

Your idle air control valve may be dirty or the wire harness may be damaged. First try cleaning the throttle body with throttle body cleaner and make sure you use all the can up and try to get the idle air control valve cleaned. A faulty or dirty idle air control valve will cause engine to stall when put in to gear from idle. Good luck and hope this helps. Keep me posted, be glad to help you get your car running 100% soon.

1987 bmw 325 idles rough

On the 325 series I have worked on (your year, make, model), I have found that idling issues like you describe are the result of a defective oxygen sensor. Replace the oxygen sensor with a Bosch unit. That should take care of your issue.
