Hey Cody,
Sounds like its time for a transmission filter and fluid change.. and BEWARE - If the transmission has not been serviced on a regular schedule you may not be able to drive away from the service shop..(THIS IS NORMAL for a GM transmission that has not been serviced regularly -- I have had this happen to myself once on a '96 suburban!!) If you need to get the trans rebuilt ..TIP - go to the local drag strip and ask several of the mechanics who the best transmission man in town is..(THEY KNOW!!)..use him!! It can usually be rebuilt for around $1400.. Good luck!!!

Sounds as if 3rd gear is our of the transmission or it could be the shift selenoid.

SOURCE: 1988 chevy c1500 problem with second gear

be 1988 and Im sure it has high miles, sound like worn transmission, transmission flush and replace it with new fluid might help some. get use tranny from a junk yard better and cost lot less than rebuilt. being GM mechanic for many years i see transmission on a truck with 100k tend to have leaks or need rebuilding. again i see some have better luck but rear.

SOURCE: I have a 1995 chev.

Ok if you have 1st and second gear and it shifts to neutral instaed of 3rd , that means the 3-4 clutches are burned up.This is common problem with the 4L60E transmission and the transmissionwill need to be removed and rebuilt ot repaired. The 3-4 clutches are the weak point in the trans and i usually use a z-pack when rebuilding them.It increases hold capacity and durability.

Clicking noise while reversing

put it on a hoist and visually inspect it then adjust the shift cable its moving to close to park position and the clicking is probably the park pin in the trans

brake caliper stuck? front brake pads. get some one to listen at the front wheels while its moving. that will at least eliminate the possibility. I've had that happen more times than i can count on diff. cars!

depending on the type of pads you used, some , even new make that grinding noise , some are metalic some ceramic , if they were installed by a mechanic, take them back and ask him about the grinding noise,, they guaranty their work I'm sure, and if you mess with them you could lose that guaranty,

Trany not moving in first gear

That sounds like a problem with the shifter linkage. Have someone sit in the car and shift the car, with the engine off, from first to neutral and back, Go under the hood, and see if the linkage is moving with the shifter.

Though you did not say, I'm going to assume it's a stick shift.
Shifter popping out of gear nearly always indicated an internal transmission problem (likely worn synchros) Either way, trans needs to be replaced or rebuilt. Transfer case is supposed to be filled with good grade auto transmission fluid, though some people opt for gear oil (but it gets really thick in cold weather). You may aslo have a t-case problem if you ran it low, but it is not related to shifter problem!
