Question about 1983 Chevrolet S-10

1 Answer

I have a 1983 Chevy S10 pickup. With headlights off all gauges work normal. When you pull the headlight switch on all the panel lights except the windshield wiper switch locator light never turn on and all the gauges lose power. Also both turn signal indicator lights and high beam indicator lights in the center of the instrument cluster come on without signaling a turn or switching to high beams. All exterior lights and turn signals work normal all the time when headlight switch is pulled on or pushed off and when high/low beam switch is actuated with headlights on. So you can drive the vehicle but you have no intrument lights or accurate electrically operated gauges with headlight switch pulled on. When you go to headlight high beam with the head light switch pulled on the high beam indicator light goes out which is opposite of what it should do. This problem appears to be temperature related as all lights and gauges will begin to work occasionally when the headlights have been on and the vehicle has been driven for a long time with the heater on and the cab gets very warm. The problem seems to only occur when you first pull out the headlight switch and if the lights and gauges do come on they never go off. If you turn off the head lights at this point when all gauges and panel lights have been working the gauges never lose power and work normal as described in the beginning.

Take a look at the dash ground wire located next to the right of ebrake release handle. if the bole holding the ground wire is loose, which was quite common it will cause all kinds of feed back problems, like described in the comments section to your question.

1987 toyota pickup lost all electrical except headlights

What works? Just headlights? Does anything electrical work that does not need the ignition switch to be in the on position? Possibly four way flashers, brake lights, horn, interior light, dash lights in instrument panel as well as headlights should all work without the key in the ignition and in the acc or on position. If this is what you have, then I would say you need to replace the ignition switch.
Hope this helps.

I have a 95 chevy s10 pickup and the headlights went out, I still have high beams and running lights. What should I look for?

I would check the dimmer switch for power in both high and low beam circuits if you know for a fact the headlight bulbs are good.

1983 chevy caprice classic my dashboard lights dont work and also the clock stops working when i turn the lights on

Probably bad ground in the dash circuitry. You'll have to pull it out and check all the connections. Big job.

Sounds like ur computer. When a computer goes out they seem to go in different ways. Also there should be main circuit relays either under the hood or on driver side dash. If you pop a main relay it will kill all main circuits to protect a circuit melt down. Hope this helps. Thanks Josh

1996 chevy s10 headlights will not burn on high or low beam .

I would take a look at your headlight dimmer switch. The dimmer switch works independent of the DRL system.
Below is the wiring diagram for you vehicle.
Good luck and let me know.

Headlights won't work Chevy K-10 Pickup

With electrical problems I always look for a bad ground wire, especially on older vehicles. Look for any wire that goes to an inner fender or the engine, there maybe a faulty relay in the circuit too. good luck, Chuck

Try checking the headlight switch it may have broken contacts in it. Easy fix go to a salvage yard find same make and model truck, swap headlight switches.
