Check the #3 O2 senser that is located just in front of the cat. really check the wiring that it connects to in that area, as mine had a wire pinched between the frame and the body ( from the factory) that eventaulaly wore through and casued the sensor to fail. usually no error code was set and the engine would stumble terrible from 40 to 60 mph. Had to replace the sensor with new, and clean out corrosion IN THE CONNECTER before everything was resolved.
there are 4 O2 sensors in the 97, 1 on each bank, 1 just before the cat and 1 after the cat. the one before the cat appears to be critical to set mixture, so check or replace that one first

If you mean the engine starts running rough at say 40 or 50 mph, once you go into overdrive the engine is working very hard and any weak component can show up. Could be spark plugs or other factors.
If the check engine light is on you need to have the computer checked for trouble codes to help narrow down the options.

1997 Ford Van, V-6, 4.2 engine with 74,000 miles. For the past week, every other day, the motor will choke out and run rough and only go about 40 mph for about 10 minutes, then the van will be ok and run...

the first thing you need to do is take your van to a autoparts store, and have them read the codes in the computer. this is a free service. a flashing service engine light is a indication of a emergency situation so get there soon. once the codes have been read get back to me and i can probably help you more

90 f150 5.0 has issues

If your check engine light is on, you will need to have it tested to see what codes have been stored. The light will stay on until it has been tested and codes cleared. Disconneting the battery for five minutes will also reset the light, but if the truck is running rough, you don't want to run it like that. It could cause severe damage to the engine. Best bet is to get it tested and correct the underlying problem before it costs you big bucks. Good Luck

Transmission problem

car out of cruise control flutters or runs rough from 45 mph to 55 mph and once over 55 mph runs smooth. I notice from 45 to 55 the rpm guage moves with flutter or rough running engine. when i put in cruise control it smooths out.
