My 96 Grand Cherokee only spits, sputters and sometimes backfires when I first drive it each day. It starts after about 8 miles and only lasts for about 3 more miles. After that it runs perfect for the rest of the day. It doesn't matter what the weather is or whether I have the a/c on.

Try replacing the Oxygen Sensors... I had the same problem and replaced my Oxygen Sensors and I haven't had any problems since.

1997 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE LAREDO START THEN IMMEDIATELY STALLS

Check fuel pressure at the motor--with a gauge
Check fuel pump volume
Check Current --anywhere in system you choose

Pumping the pedal only works the TPS Sensor,
nothing to do with the pump for the most part

Back probe the TPS & check voltages

I prefer a scope-- but a volt meter is better than nothing

I think the pump check valve is gone, so turn the KO/EO
then turn Key off & see if press holds on gauge

Is the filter more than 5 years old?

1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Stalls out, engine quits running

since its a 1997 your jeep has EFI, electronic fuel injection. The most probable reason for your troubles would be the injectors or a problem with the computer controling them, not allowing enough gas to be pushed into the cylinder causing stalling or lack of power, also too much gas iin the cylinder can lead to back firing and stalling. This would also explain the reason it takes so long to start back up some times, all the excess gas in the cylinder is flooding the motor and u have to wait till the gas disipates till the engine will turn over.

If the Jeep is stalling when hot and hard to restart, replace the crankshaft sensor.
