I have a 2002 Hyundai Sonata 4CL (interference engine) that broke down recently (no longer starting) and upon inspection, found out that the timing belt needed replaced. After taking the timing belt off, we found not only a lot missing teeth on the belt in general, but there is a large section that the teeth are all missing, which leads us to believe something may have jammed. Also, knowing that all of this happened while the car was in motion, the big concern is that the pistons may have been damaged. Right now, our option seems to be to replace the timing belt, put everything back together and cross our fingers that it will work. Or is there another option/way to make sure there wasn't engine damage? Please forgive me if any of this doesn't make sense, my boyfriend is the one working on the car and this is what I've been able to decipher.

I think you are going to find that your valves are bent and you will have no compression. removing the head and getting a complete valve job is most likely in your future. in a fight between the top of the piston and the bottom of the valve the piston wins.

2002 hyundai sonata timing belt

Not likely. A timing belt out of whack means the valves are no longer synchronized with the pistons and intake and exhaust are reduced in effectiveness and efficiency.

Before spending that kind of money on a car that age I would have another mechanic look at it. Could turn out to be a fix that would extend the life of the car several years.

Timing belt broke on hyundai sonata 2002 what should I do? The mechanic saya theres a ten percent chance that replacing the belt will solve the problem.

You have had contact with a mechanic

Why are you asking for advise or a personal
decision?

Wasn't all your thoughts & questions answered?

Is the car still at the shop waiting on your authorization
to continue

We need that kind of info.

We're not experts that even know if your engine is
an interferance type, you have to tell us. That is why
I guess the mechanic is expecting major damage from
a broken belt

The shop still has to look inside the cylinders with the
proper camera they probalby don't have or ever heard
of ,to look for damage

They have to do a cylinder leak down test for valve damage

If everything is good & you got lucky, then you replace the
water pump, all idler pulleys, tensioners & the broken belt

Timing belt broke at about 55 miles per hour. do you think the valves are bent and what parts do I need to buy other than belt? Oh 2001 hyundai sonada with 2.6L motor. THANKS Jimmy

The 2.4l and 2.5l engines are interference engines, meaning it is highly likely that you bent your valves when your timing belt broke. Besides the timing belt, you may need a new belt tensioner and pulleys. I would replace the water pump too.

Timing belt replacement interval

My rule of thumb for Timing belts:
replace at 60,000 miles, and every 40,000 miles thereafter. Having said that, I often let
cars go until the timing belt starts showing signs of wear (usually every 50K - 75K miles)

But www.autozone.com (register free at www.autozone.com) is recommending for your
car driving in "severe driving conditions" (aka normal stop-start driving) that your 2000 Sonata
have:
60,000 miles - replace
90,000 miles - inspect for wear
120,000 miles - replace
150,000 miles - inspect for wear

The 155 page owners manual (I found one at the link below - you may prefer to try Hyundai)
makes no mention of the timing belt at all.

IS THE 4CYL ENGINE IN A 2002 SONATA AN INTERFERENCE ENGINE? TIMING BELT IS MISSING TEETH AND BROKE THE CRANK SENSOR. WOULD IT ALSO DAMAGE THE VALVES?

The only way to know would truly be to take off the head and look in it, but off the top of my head, I'm going to say yes. These engines are known for close quarters up top.

My 2005 Hyundai Sonata (V6-2.7L engine) has 52,000 miles on it. I took it to the shop and had it inspected. The tech said that I should replace the timing belt soon. This sounds suspicious as I thought...

Not on this year and make, Hyundai Sonata with a 2.7L engine, Hyundai recommends replacing timing belt every 60,000 miles or 48 months, whichever occurs first, this is an interference engine, which piston to valve damage will occur due to timing belt failure.

Timing belt broke on hyundai accent how do i replace it and the timing marks

1st you may want make sure that's not an interference engine. if it is then chances are the valves are bend in the head. changing the timing belt probably won't help then. If its not an interference head, then you would need a timing mark diagram which can be found online. be very careful that all marks are aligned. when finshed installing the timing belt, rotate engine by hand twice and re-align marks before putting the rest back together! hyundai should be able to tell u if the engine runs interference or not.

Where is auto trans filter on 2002 hyundai sonata w/2.4 engine ?

I did some checking and found that there is little to no info available, the only mention was that the internal filter is not user serviceable.Autozone sells a screw on external filter for your year and model but they don't show the location, try checking the trans oil cooler for the screw on filter.
