Causes A code P0440 could mean one or more of the following has happened:

  • The gas cap is not installed or working properly
  • The purge solenoid has failed
  • The canister is plugged and not working properly
Possible Solutions With a P0440 OBD-II trouble code, diagnosis can be tricky at times. Here are some things to try:
  • Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the code, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
  • Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses
  • Inspect for damaged or disconnected hoses around the Evap purge solenoid
  • Check and/or replace the sensor
  • Check and/or replace the purge valve
  • Have a professional use a smoke machine to detect leaks

On my 1999 Buick Century the diagnostics codes come back as P0304 and P0440. P0304 is spark plug misfire. The P0440 is in Evap issue. Does anyone know what the problem is?

Misfire could be coil issue or poor compression depending at what point it misfires.
EVAP issue could be a leaking fuel filler cap or an air leak in the vacuum pipes.

Hello there,my 2001 echo is lighting up trouble codes p0440 p0441 p0446; how and where should i start?

code p0440 refers to evaporative emission (EVAP) system--malfunction=== causes --hose connections --intake leak--EVAP canister purge valve
code po441 refers to EVAP --incorrect flow detected==causes the same as for po440
code po446 refers to EVAP system vent control --circuit malfunction===causes --wiring---EVAP can purge valve--ECM
generally I would replace the purge valve as it is common to all codes
