Volvo s40 gdi

Hi, my volvo (99 reg) gdi seems to run well until it reaches about 3000 rpm it then hits a flat spot where you feel a loss of power to the point that if you try to accelerate it will even lose revs? but this only happens 2 out of 3 times sometime you go out and it runs beautifully! i've had a new ECU and checked for carbon build up. i've also had the throttle valve checked and a new cat put on but it still happens? seems to run well if floored? problem happens more when cruising?
can anyone help??

My 1998 Volvo does the same sometimes. Better petrol helps for me, these engines like the higher octane petrol. My car does not like the BP petrol at all for example.

run the fault codes and look for a problem area in the vane actuator of the turbo
it could be a sensor problem or a MAP sensor problem
this is indicated by the pressures being generated or not generated by a turbo generating pressure from the throttle opening on acceleration or held at constant speed

Yes, having no thermostat can cause the car to run fast as it will still be set in it's "warm up" mode and will be injecting a richer mixture of fuel/air into the cylinders. There may be an additional cold start injector that just works while the engine is cold. You will probably use more fuel like this. It's not a great idea to run with no thermostat anyway because you get uneven hot and cold spots around the engine which is bad for it. Cheers

Volvo v 40 non gdi high revs constant

Still think ot vacuum related .This will push the revs up sky high .Get a good cigar and pulloff a vacum pipe .Take a good puff on the cigar now puff the emoke down the vaccum pipe .Now do you know what your looking for .You got it ,,, smoke ,,,,than you have found the leak.Thats if you have one ..Can you get a obd check it will tell you what it is ..Thermostat removal wont change the engine revs

Hi! I have problem with my VOLVO S40 1.8GDI 2000. When I start the engine RPM its fine, but after few minutes RPM starts jumping for about 30 seconds and again everything is fine until i restart engine...

yes buit its complicated and could be a number of things, best advice is a dealer because it work out cheaper in the long run that changing parts willi nilly

Volvo s4o 1.8 gdi 2003 model, I have just cleaned the throttle body and now the car is over reving at 2-3000 revs at idle and surging when driving any ideas please?

think you have damaged the unit ,you will need to replace it .

Lack of power

for starters: check clogged fuel filter, check fuel pressure, check for dirty air filter, and check for spark in spark plugs.

Where's the fuel pump relay located on a volvo s40 1999 1.8 gdi?

if the pump is not working check under carpet along edge by left rear door there is a spot they corrode near a connector even look in the connector if you see green on connector replace the section of wire bypass connector

YOU MAY HAVE A IDLE SPEED CONTROL VALVE PROBLEM, CLEAN IT FIRST, THEN DISCONNECT THE BATTERY, FOLLOW THE PROCEDURE I HAVE ATTACHED.

Here is the most common cause of this stall and idle speed issues, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve, they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

one unit that operates ratio changes and is connected to the engine is that vacuum operated actuator on the transmission
it is possible that that unit is failing , vacuum hose is leaking and that will cause ratio changes as the vacuum varies
run the fault codes to check for wiring problems or VSS or TCM problems as well
