Engine Codes: P0031, P0142, P1148 received after preforming self test. Asked my regular (non Nissan) mechanic about O2 sensor issues, and was told it may be my "upstream" sensor causing two codes to come up. Could that be true? Also, P1148 relates to Air/Fuel sensor problems. Versa has now started to die as I try to reverse out of park. I'm wondering if there may be some sort of defect out there that I am unaware of? Considering there's under 42,000 miles on my vehicle, these issues just seem to be a lot at one time. . . Any thoughts, imput, or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Great! Thank you! Do you think that the same part is what's causing the car to stall out as well? Or, is the air/fuel code something different? I was told sensors wouldn't cause the vehicle to die, or make it feel like the gas isn't getting through. However, the person who explained that part to me was an employee of O'Reilly Auto, and not a mechanic. . .

I have been searching for all possible solutions to my codes: P0031, P0142, and P1148 for my Nissan Versa. I've noticed that there are many different meanings to these codes, depending on the vehicle"s make/model. Anyway, since I was told it was a bad upstream O2 sensor, I have also been notified that it could be a bad o2 bank 1 sensor 3. With all of the information I have been finding online, it doesn't seem like both the front and rear sensors should go out with only 42,000 miles on the vehicle. Also, my last code: P1148 lists the Air/Fuel sensor. Is this yet another bad sensor? If so, what in the world is wrong with my car? There's no logical reason for 3 sensors to go out at once on such a new vehicle. . . Please help!

Really?? Thank you SO much for this information! I will call Nissan right away, and talk to them about this issue. Will they still help even if I am not the original owner? Cost wouldn't normally be such a huge deal, but being a single mom doesn't leave me with hundreds in exra cash just lying around. Ha! Plus, it seemsmy tires are already shot as well, which is surprising considering it's under 42,000. Anyway, that's a $400 replacement on it's own. Ugh. . . I'll repost what I find out after I take it in to Nissan.

Your mechanic is right, replace the upstream sensor (it is screwed into the exhaust manifold) and your codes will go away. Click on the link below to read more:

This is the correct answer. All oxygen sensors fail between 40,000 and 60,000 miles

  • Anonymous Dec 08, 2010

A bad O2 sensor would cause your vehicle to act up the fuel delivery causing it to stall and die.

How fixed p 1148 nissan armada 2008

It may be a faulty oxygen sensor.
For Models 2005 and up:
- Faulty Air Fuel Ratio Sensor 1 Bank 1
- Air Fuel Ratio Sensor 1 Bank 1 circuit is open or shorted
- Air Fuel Ratio Sensor 1 Bank 1 circuit electrical connection

Before you rush off to buy replacement parts it's worth giving a mobile mechanic a call. Those guys are usually very good and far cheaper than a dealership. And a second opinion is worth paying for.

What are the probable causes of DTCs P0031, P0603, and P1148?

Clean out you idle air bypass valve with carb cleaner. P0031 air/fuel sensor 1 heater (B1)bank 1, p0603 engine control back up circuit,p1148 closed loop B1. Broken heater in upper O2 sensor is one if not all of your problems. Replace all of your O2 sensors & reset engine light.

All 4 O2 sensors failed at same time

No that is not possible. You either have lost power or ground to sensors or the system has a fuel control issue.

How to solve Diagnostic code p1148 nissansentra 04

Code 1148 and 1031 are both for the O2 sensor in front of the catalytic converter. The sensor would need to be tested with a scanner and a multi-meter.

What is p1148

P1148 - Closed Loop Control Function Bank 1
This mean that the closed loop control function for bank 1 does not operate even when vehicle is driving in the specified condition.

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) or Electronic Control Module(ECM) monitor the function of the Front Oxygen (O2) sensor or Air/Fuel (A/F) sensor by comparing the signal with the Rear O2 sensor.

Symptoms:
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)

Possible causes:
- Harness or connectors Front Oxygen (O2) sensor or Air/Fuel (A/F) sensor 1 circuit is open or shorted.
- Front Oxygen (O2) sensor or Air/Fuel (A/F) sensor bank 1
- Front Oxygen (O2) sensor or Air/Fuel (A/F) sensor bank 1 heater

Possible solution:
- Repair harness or connector. If repair is needed
- Replaced Front Oxygen (O2) sensor or Air/Fuel (A/F) sensor bank 1

Then, possible causes are faulty harness or connectors to the air fuel ratio sensor, a faulty air fuel ratio sensor (1) or faulty air fuel ratio sensor (1) heater. Most likely yes it is just faulty sensor. Just replace this devices and reset the stored codes.

Here's a though.... are you the original owner? It is still covered under the manufacturer's warranty for emmision control components up to.... are you ready for this....100,000 miles!! No joke. Call your local dealer and have them fix it. If they give you grief, get the owner's handbook and call the service rep's number for Nissan of North America and see what they will do to get this resolved.

Codes p0031 p1148 ? What/where are they?

I am having the very same problem with my 2007 Nissan Versa right now as well. However, I have one more additional code: P0142. P0031 refers to the front oxygen sensor heater circuit, low imput. P1148 says: Air/Fuel sensor s connection is shortened or open. I have been digging around online, and have come up with a possible bad upstream O2 sensor, a bad bank 1, sensor 3 malfunction (and replacement), and a possible connection problem. I have NO idea why all of these problems would arrive from a car that's only 3 years old. I've been trying to search for any recalls, considering if it's taken to a dealer to fix, the end cost will be over $600. That's just plain crazy!!
