I just bought a used 1991 Pontiac Grand Am which has a 4 Tech 2.5 liter engine. I took the car to a shop to have the oil changed and was told that there is a "cylinder" or "canister" that holds the oil filter in place. This canister is held on by a bolt with a hex head. On my particular car the bolt's hex head has been rounded so that the mechanic cannot get a grip on the bolt to remove it. He further stated that whomever tried to use enough force to remove the cylinder would break it and then the car could not run until the cylinder is replaced. He suggested that I search online and at salvage yards to try to find a replacement cylinder in case the one on the car is broken during removal. I have had no luck researching online or calling salvage yards at all. I am beginning to wonder if the engine was replaced in this car at some point and doesn't belong to the pontica grand am at all. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

To remove the bolt with the rounded head I would try cutting a slot in the top of the bolt head. Cut the slot to fit the largest straight tip screwdriver that you can find. then use a pair of pliers or vise grips to grip the shaft of the screwdriver to put more torque on the screwdriver (it helps if the screwdriver has a square shaft. If you think that the bolt is too seized into the engine block to try that, another thing to try is to weld another bolt to the head of the original bolt, (I would use a wire feed welder) so that you have an undamaged bolt head to use a wrench on (preferably a strong socket wrench). If you do weld another bolt onto the original bolt, make sure that you let the bolt cool down completely because when you get the bolt hot, it will expand and will not break loose until it has cooled. Have a fire extinguisher handy and good luck. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: Hi: We have a 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix GT. We need

Hello. I can assist you. The black metal piece that you are referring to is a solenoid which allows the ignition to let go of the key when it is put in park. Remove the screws from under the plastic cover that surrounds the steering column. Next look along the ignition cylinder and you will see a spring loaded tab. Push that in and the cylinder will pull out. Now push in the new one and replace the plastic cover. Thanks for choosing Fixya! REgards, Joe

The oil pressure sending unit can be in the block, or near the filter, the oil level sending unit if equipped is usually in the pan.

I haves 2004 Pontiac grand prix I was told I had a busted head gasket, took it yo the shop they said I have a leak in my elbow and now my service engine light is on.

just check your oil if its milkey looking then coolent is getting in and more than likley its a head gasket, if not then check for water leeks on the engine block and heads not the hoses if none there check hoses if its in the elbo as they said i assume they mean the one where the thermastat is located those are 19.95 at advance auto, maby cheaper elswhere, easy to change and yes a leak can cause a check engine light to come on, easy way to check for a leak is to use a black light and yellow glasses can be bought at parts stores, the engine coolent will appear to glow and finding the leak may be easyer depending on its location
