220 degrees is normal operaing temperature for your car. The thermostat does not open until 195 degrees and the fans don't come on until 126 to 128 degrees. If it gets over 129 degrees and the fans have not turned on then the cooling fan system is the cause of the problem. (cooling fan, cooling fan temp switch, cooling fan relay, etc.)

NOTE: Error correction. The above should read "...fans don't come on until 226 to 228 degrees. If it gets over 229..." Sorry, just a case of the dumb-dumbs.

On my 2002 pontiac grand am my temperature guage goes about almost 3 lines over 200. Is that normal ?

most cars these days do run hotter than they use to. Back in the day, cars were manufactured to run at cooler temps such as 185-195 degrees. So in most cases that would be normal. If the car starts to smell like it is over-heating I would then have it checked but for now I would say it's okay. In newer models they are made to run as hot as 220 degrees. I hope this answers your curosities :o) Jesus loves you, John 3:16-17 (KJV)

The abs light and brake light is on the speedometer does not work until i hit 30. the tempature gauge fluxuates from 210 to almost the 260 and then goes back down to 210. What is causing these issues?

This is most likely 2 problems. The ABS/Brake light and speedo issue will be the speed sensor located in the read differential housing. The temp guage issue (and I'm assuming this is at idle) could be thermostat or temp sending unit. The fluctuation is causes by the electric cooling fan cycling on and off to control the temp. However, most of the time this fluctuation should be from about 195 - 220 degrees.

What is the max temp before fan goes on

It varies from car to car. but around 220 degrees. Noting that all cars do not have an accurate temperture reading at the guage, per manufacturer
