I went to reverse my car off the drive and my steering wheel has gone totally stiff and the battery light came on although has since gone off the steering wheel will not turn???

Sounds like a serious engine problem, most likely you ran out of oil or coolant, and your engine seized. Hard steering and battery light likely mean the engine stopped. Smoke is a bad sign.

It should like you may have a leak if it took a whole litre. Once you fix the leak you may also find the power steering pump still makes noise. This can be repaired by replacing the pump. I hope this helps.
Is the unit an active feed back capable unit? If not then I'd look at the steering column bearings. Although the speed at which you are driving should have bearing on the bearing (pun intended).
Sounds like the serpentine bellt has come off the drive pulleys. this belt is the link between the crankshaft pulley and all the other pulleys. it drives the power steering pump, a/c compressor, and your alternator.
Stiff steering due to no Power steering pump activity and the battery light is on due to the alternator not charging the battery and supplying power to vehicle components.
