Power steering failed while driving. being stuck in traffic i shut the car off and re-started it. the power steering came back. big problem or fluid issue?

  • mrchubz Jul 13, 2008

I had the same problem with the power steering in my wifes car it would become extremely hard to turn then it would just break loose and turn. In our case our amplifier was the culprit. It drew too much power from the car and did not leave enough for the electric assisted power steering.

That is fairly common. i di one last week on an altima, steering is usually tight/loose as you turn the wheel. it connects in car with a 14mm bolt then down to top of rack with a 12mm bolt, not too bad to change unless it is rusted to rack, takes 1-1/12 hrs to do if rusted op

Toyota Corolla 1.3 esteem 2014 model: Power steering light comes on when turn on the ignition and when driving.

This says it does have a fluid reservoir? Some electric power steering just has an electric pump as a opposed to a mechanical pump driven by the serpentine belt.

Just off the top of my head I would say that the fluid level is low and/or the pump is sucking air into the system and is dropping pressure pressure after a while.

2004 ford f250 powerstroke. brake pedal is hard to press at first then goes straight to the floor also power steering quit working at the same time.

Hmm.. Low fluid in the power steering pump, broken belt driving the power steering pump, failed component causing loss of power steering fluid, failed power steering pump.

Check for a broken belt first, check the oil in the pump, look for leakage under the truck.

If the pump is low on fluid you want to put about half the amount in that you're going to need and then start the truck and turn the wheel slowly from stop to stop, each way- spend about ten seconds going from one stop to the other. This will allow any air in the system to be purged out in a controlled fashion, it can really spray if you get a big, compressed bubble of air in the system and release it quickly. Shut the truck off and top the steering pump up, check for leaks.

Well, I'm glad your O.K. You could have one of many problems going on, I would start with the simple, change your air filter. If you service your car regularly, thats probably not it, but ya never know, there could be something stuck in there. If that don't fix it, then there are many more things to look at, and you will probably want someone qualified to check it out for you, As I said before tho, It's definatly not dieing because of the steering fluid. Are there any smells when the car dies?

It is most likely you just turned the wheel to the farthest limit of its travel, and the power assist cutout at that point.

Check your fluid level to make sure its up to where it should be.

If fluid is fine, I wouldn't worry about it...it is fine and a normal occurance.

1985 Chevy Celeberty

Check your power steering fluid level. Top it off with power steering fluid only.

The pump and or steering mechanism may be failing. Be very careful driving this vehicle as a full failure could leave you without any steering.
