I have 1983 Jeep CJ7 with auto transmission and tilt wheel. While driving, it will die at inappropriate times, but if key is held in start position in either drive or reverse, it will keep running. In neutral, of course, the starter will grind, but not in drive or reverse. If key is relaxed from start position, it will want to die. I am replacing the ignition switch that is located on steering column, not to be confused with the ignition where key fits in. Is there a certain way or position this ignition switch should be installed and will this solve my problem, or is there something else I should be looking at. I have previously replaced the ignition itself where the key fits.

Once you install the new switch, it can be adjusted. They usually go bad internally so you should not have any problems.

the return spring on the starter is weak or the starter solinoid is fried, it's mounted on the firewall next to the battery. If you ant some more help wll be glad to give ya advise. the cheepest is the starter relay. then the starter bendix spring may be wron out. The puff of smoke is your starter burning up from turning when it was supposed to disingauge on start up.

SOURCE: i need to know the exact width of a 1983 cj7 from

You will need more than just the length of the housings to do that. you need to know the distance from spring perch to spring perch, distance from perch to backing plate on each side and the offset of the center section, so that when mounted, the driveshafts are not running at an angle. You also need to find the pinion angle at rest: (the amount of upward or downward pitch of the pinion)
In making these measurements you can avoid the possibility of having one axle protruding further past the springs, or damaging universal joints by having them run at an angle that isn't correct.
You can find lots of info on swaps at several online jeep forums. Many of the people there have done swaps and have taken those measurements and have the info you need to do it correctly.
If you have access to a welder, cutting tools and jigs, that opens up numerous possibilities as any differential can be used in any vehicle if it is properly prepared before install!! Just offhand, i don't think that the wagoneer units will fit because it is much wider than a cj. Try jeepforums .com for swap info.
good luck

SOURCE: replacing front shackle 1983 jeep cj7

Shackles are pretty straight forward. Remove the existing bolts, change the shackles and reverse the procedure to install. Good idea to change the bushings while you're in there if they are at all questionable. It's best to do this with the CJ in the air, supported on the frame and use a floor jack under the axle to lift/lower the spring in/out of the shackle, one side at a time.

No power to coil on cj7

Sounds like start solinoid has bad connection or needs replaced. Power to coil comes from start solenoid. Check solenoid and wires and fussable link.

How to remove ignition switch from 83 jeep cj7

you will need to remove the steering wheel, and remove the compression plate and then remove the hazard button and the blinker lever and then remove the turn signal switch plate,, then you will see a small screw going down into the column ( right where the ignition switch body is ),, remove this screw and the ingition lock will pull straight out. put new lock in and reverse tear down instructions and you are good to go.
( NOTE: the steering wheel will need a steering wheel puller to remove -- and the compression plate will need a compression tool to remove and install the small lock ring from the steering wheel shaft --- these tools can be bought at your local auto parts store or they can be rented at your local tool rental store ).

How do i replace the passanger side window regulator on a 1983 cj

You will have to take the door panel off. Roll the window down/up about 1/2 way. Look at the channel were the bottom of the glass sits. There are most likely a couple of screws, 1 near each end. Loosen them up and remove the glass by holding on to it while lowering the assembly all the way (crank it down. Tilt one end up and lower the other. Glass should come out of the track. Reverse to replace the new glass.
