I have a 2000 Alero Gx coupe.. Same setup. I had to use some sort of plyers, Grip the stock rubber shift knob, and twist to the left as hard as I could to get it unstuck, then set plyers aside, and unscrewed with my two fingers. Once off, that safety feature and spring slids right off. you can use it with a custom knob, unless you are cutting it down to make a short shifter (Or a short-shifter kit, either way works)
