My car won't start I turned the key and all I hear is a click and the dashboard shows a picture of a car with a padlock .how do I unlock it?

With a voltage meter see how many volts are at the starter terminal. If not 12+ volts you have a bad connection. Check connection at the starter solenoid. Does it have 12+volts? Short the solenoid. Does it put voltage to the starter?

sound like problem in the theft security systm,try this insert another key in the ignition switch, the other key could be worn where pcm and bcm dont recognize it. and switch ignition on engine off watch padlock symbol with ignition switch left on 10 minutes the padlock symbol will extinguish or turn off then you will turn off ignition switch wait 5 seconds then try starting vechicle if start your theft security failing need let dealership check it out.

the warning light with the padlock on shows that your car immobilizer is active. Need a specialist to re program your immobilizer.

Your battery doesn't have enough voltage. You can recharge it and try again. But for the age of the car it sounds like the battery might be getting old. The padlock probably has nothing to do with it. Costco has the best deals, reviews and return policy for new batteries.

no clicking as if alternator were bad ?? No clicking would be the starter solenoid , not the alternator ! Your best bet would be to take your vehicle to a qualified repair shop . Unless you know how to do automotive electrical testing ! How to use an read a wiring diagram ? We use wiring diagrams to see what all is involved in a system , circuit etc.....
