2002 maxima I was told that my 2002 maxima has a timing chain not a timing belt. However, during a recent maintenance the mechanic told me it is ready for a timing belt. Does it have a timing belt?

No, it has a timing chain that will not require maintenance. Maybe he meant the external drive belts. They should be changed on schedule.

None of the belts you list are what drive the cams.(Timing) He has a timing chain.

I have my Dad's old 1997 Nissan Maxima GXE ( he bought it brand new and always took it to Nissan dealership for everything)' It now has 295000 miles on it, but recently started making a loud rattling sound...

if your chain becomes loose it will become very noisy and should be replaced since most nissans are interference engines which means lots of money for a new engine

I need a water pump in my 1995 maxima and it has a timing chain. The dealer tells me its less expensive to change out when the car has a timing chain rather than a timing belt. An independat mechanic tells...

your engine has a timing belt not a chain and the water pump is run by the timing belt, and when the pump is changed the belt should be too,it should run you about $300 if the job is done right with the pump, belt, idlers and tensioner if needed, hope this helps

My 2002 Nissan Maxima's

I have just had a similar problem with my Nissan Cefiro (Maxima)2000
The Fault light came on and it was the front cam sensor. The part cost $183NZ ($##@) and took a few minutes to replace. Fault light went out...all ok. The told me it was a timing problem too and maybe the chains needed changing ($2500NZ) for that.
Mine has the Variable Timing System (neo Engine) which is what yours may also have. I would be changing the sensor first as that is probably the problem. Mine has only done 44,000K's (ex Japan so always suspect) and with yours only 59000 I doubt there is anything wrong with the timing chain. Hope this helps

2002 nissan maxima gle timing chain or sprockets

Ok, first off you need to take your vehicle to a Nissan dealer for a second opinion. Its not at all common to need a T-chain @ 58,000 miles unless you dont take care of your car and or you beating the snot out of it like it was stolen. What is the symptom? What caused it? When did it start? Second, this is not something an amature could/should do as it is very involved and there are alot of things you could potentially mess up. Third a new engine(long block), parts alone would run approx. 6-8 thousand dollars. A used engine could be an option and could run approx.1500-2500 dollars depending on mileage. Hope this helps and good luck.

Does the Corolla 2003 model have a timming belt or chain?Does the water pump has to be changed at 70K miles? Thanks. Adrian

Adrian,

Until 2002 Toyota's had a timing belt. After 2002, Toyota's have a timing chain. Manufacturer/dealers recommend replacement of the timing chain at about 90,000 miles. I've talked to several mechanics - including the dealer - about the cost of changing out the chain. The lowest price I found from a very reputable mechanic is $260-270. He told me that if I brought in the part, he'd reduce the cost. The dealership was almost double!

Re: water pump: I haven't found anything that stated it must be changed at 70K miles. Hope this was helpful.
