Firstly, get the proper power steering fluid that is meant for your car (some cars use power steering fluid, some use ATF, while others use hydraulic fluid...be sure to use the right one meant for your vehicle!!).

Secondly, get a clean turkey baster, with the car off, **** out the old fluid using the turkey baster and dispose of properly. Fill fluid to proper fill line on power steering reservoir bottle. Then start the car and run it for a couple of minutes while turning the steering wheel gently lock to lock and centering the wheel before shutting it off.

Third, repeat second step until fluid being sucked out matches or is VERY close to the clean fluid being put in.

Fourthly, clean up any spilled fluid thoroughly, as it may cause stains and or a fire hazard.

Fifthly, you are all done....should take you about 10-15 minutes entirely to do a proper flush of the power steering system.

Why does my powersteering whine when I turn steering wheel/

You likely have a leak in your power steering system and is now low. When the fluid gets low it gets air in it causing the whine. It is likely your steering gear or high pressure hose (or both) that is leaking. Once the leak is repaired it is recommended to flush out your power steering fluid to DEX6 Transmission fluid. I would check for all the leaks under the vehicle and then flush out to transmission fluid - just adding fluid will likely not fix the issue as these vehicles are hard to bleed the air out of.

How to flush power steering fluid

You can't unless you are going to disconnect the power steering hose from the pump. Use a turkey baster and suck all the power steering fluid from the reservoir. replace with new fluid. drive the car or turn wheel from lock to lock to rid bubbles. If you would like you can do the exchange again to just about rid all the old fluid.

I was told that the Golf power steering requires special power steering fluid, not the universal hydraulic power steering fluid. Is that right. After I added regular hydraulic fluid, the steering is very...

I hope you don't have permanent damage from using the wrong fluid. There are several different types of power steering fluid and they are not necessarily compatible. I would have a shop flush the system and refill with the specified fluid.

How to change power steering fluid?

You may want to take it to a repair shop and have them do a power steering flush, its so much easier and they will be able to flush out the rack assemblt as well.

Power steering problem

You might want to do a thorough power steering system flush....usually big dealers have the proper equipment to do so versus small shops or aftermarket shops. They pour a cleaner into the system, run the car while syphoning and refilling spontaniously. The reason your pump is going is probably having metallic debris floating around from your previously damaged pumps OR its being starved of proper lubrication OR the air is not being thoroughly bled out of the power steering system.
