We replaced the battery and alternator in our 2003 pontiac grand am about a week ago. Yesturday the battery light came on....We also are having problems when starting the car. When we turn the key sometime it just makes a click and won't start. The click is on the outside of the car. Can't hear it on the inside. My husband thinks it's the ignition switch. Are the problems related to each other or unfortunate seperate problems.

Hey DaisyMae
I do not believe its the ignition switch.
Sounds more like the battery is not making really good connections or its a bad battery. Take the battery and have the CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) checked.(the true measure of the quality of a battery).. Home Page Reilly Auto Parts These people can check it. If the battery checks good, make sure the battery connections are clean and TIGHT.. NOW - ..IF the same clicking still happens, time to check the starter solenoid and starter, -(make sure their connections are tight) ... the solenoid is located on the starter. IF ya'll are mechanically inclined you can remove the starter/solenoid and it's back to O'Reilly's for a check... Your problem is 99.99% one of these items. (disconnect the battery when removing the starter)..
Please rate as helpful ..if this helps..thanks and good luck.

SOURCE: car wont start...sometimes

Sounds like a bad starter solenoid, usually cheapest and easiest to replace the starter and solenoid as a unit. It is always best to check for power between the solenoid and the starter with a test light, if the solenoid clicks but the test light doesn't light up you have found the problem in the solenoid.

SOURCE: 2002 Pontiac Grand prix wont start; unable to remove key

On many cars, if the battery is dead, it locks the key in the ignition. Put a battery charger on the car or replace the battery and give it a shot.

Good luck.

SOURCE: 1997 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX GTP 3.8L supercharged:

The positive battery cable is prone to corrosion at the battery end. Many times, the connector will completely decay loose at the cable end. Replace the cable if that is the case--don't use a clamp-on replacement terminal as they are prone to failure. Make sure the negative cable is in good condition as well. Check the connector interior for a bright lead surface. Check the tightness of both cables at their far end terminals. Hope this helps!

Battery drain overnight on pontiac 1994sunbird

The alarm light will not kill the battery. Your diode in the alternator may be bad. This will slowly drain the battery. Replace the alternator. Or charge it up and go to auto parts store and have them test the battery and alternator and starter.

the first thing is to replace the battery, they said it was defective, or recharge it and then have the charging system tested, you may have a defective battery.

I belive they didn't reset the oil light timer. I belive the sequence is 1. key on (not acc with engine off)
2. step on the brake pedal 5 times within 10 seconds. 3. key off. 4. start car. 5. check if the light went out. you may have to try it a few times to get it.
