Could be anything or everything here ,i have the same vehicle which is my sunday car as i cannot afford the price of fuel for it compared to my diesel escort.Now i suspect the engine breather but i would need my head under the bonnet to find the exact problem as it couyld be the small vacumn pipe to the fuel shut off valve on the fuel rail ,a split or perished breather pipe .Anything in fact along these lines is what i would look at first .Before i would start looking at things like fuel pump pressure and worrying about computer diagnostics.Should start in neutral though as mine does so it may need the inhibitor switch looking at later but not urgent .Mine is nice to drive but as it came from scotland it is well corroded underneath which is what i have been doing this sunday morning and thats spraying the underneath with a evil mix of underseal,diesel and clean engine oil all mixed up ,i kinow it takes a while to dry out but ? the rust absorbs the oil mix from the paint and turns back into metal -and no i dont understand this action but i know it works
