If the problem occurs after the car has been driven long enough to reach normal operating temperature, the problem is the starter. If the 'no crank' occurs cold, retest the battery.

2004 xterra would sound sluggish when cranking. Similar to the sound a car makes if timing is off. Belts are fine. And put new battwey and terminals. Cranked fine dor two to three rimes but started doing...

while the voltage on the battery may be perfect with a multimeter on a still test , what is the battery voltage when trying to crank the engine. If the voltage drops to below 10 volts you have a battery problem. All headlights dim while cranking and the flatter the battery the greater the dim of the lights. It is bad practice to have the lights on while trying to crank the engine as the current draw for the lights takes power away from the ECM and ignition system

Xterra won't start when the battery has juice free of corrosion and starter is freshly installed

Check the cleanliness and tightness of the battery terminals. Loosen, twist and retighten them. Also check the cleanliness and tightness of the black earth cable where it attaches to the engine block/bodywork. A bad earth can cause the symptoms you describe.

A quick check you can do is to connect a jump cable to the battery negative terminal - the earth - and connect the other end of the cable to somewhere suitable on the engine/bodywork.

If the car starts no problem with the jumper cable - it's pointing towards a bad earth/connection somewhere on the battery earth

My 2000 xterra just stoppped running going down the road like it just turned off. The battery is good ..it turns over..it just doesn't fire up. The fuel filter is not clogged. The fuel pump is working...

I use to have a 1991 Nissan Pathfinder XE with the 3.0 engine automatic transmission. It ran fine when I baught it then started having hard to crank or dieing going down the road syndrome. Very simular to your problem. I had a Nissan technician friend in Tennessee and he told me that the distributor goes bad it will behave that way. Usually the problem can start off slow like mine where it would hard to start and die or just go completely out. I recommend replacing the distributor. Mark the shaft alignment before removing the old one and install the new one aligned up the same as the old one was. Just an added tip the 3.0 Litre engine block is the same as the 3.3 litre engine and theres alot of guys dropping these 3.3 engines in the old 1980 model 300Z cars! I own a 2001 Xterra so feel free to ask anything! Harlan or [email protected]

The battery on my 2007 Xterra just died. Is there a possibility of some sort of issue other than the battery being dead? Its only 3 years old.

Hi,

There are possibilities regarding battery become dead and can't be charge anymore.

The first one would be the battery has a life expectancy of 1.5 years to 2 years.

The battery if less than a year and died, that will be a manufacturers fault, where the battery might have some defects when it was manufactured.

The battery died less than a year can be attributed to overcharging of electricity from your alternator.

Your lucky your battery lasted for 3 years!

Hope that clears up your problem!

Thanks for using Fixya!

2006 nissan xterra keeps dying

If it dies while driving it may be a a crank sensor. If it dies when you take your foot off the gas cruising it most likely an Idle Air Control valve. Either way this should still be under warenty if it is the computer. All emission related parts are covered for 4 years. This includes the computers

Xterra 2002 6 cyl. S/C - Battery reversed

hi,

found this on another board, hope it helps..jm

That is correct. If the 100A AlternatorFuse is blown, the starter will not crank, since no current can get to the neutral safety switch and the activating coil of the starter relay.
