I just had oil changed at Xpress Lube. They said I needed my cabin and air filters changed. The filters looked mildly dirty, not even sure they were mine. How often should these filers be changed?

Filters can be deceptive - as well as quickie oil change joints!! While a dirty cabin air filter will not affect your mileage or performance, a dirty air filter will rob you of power and fuel mileage.Modern air filters can take a decent amount of abuse but, if it is a disposable, they can clog up and not LOOK bad. Replacing a disposable air filter with a cleanable air filter ( like K&N or Spectre) will improve your engines performance and lifetime span and is something you can do without paying somebody to do for you.Cleaning your air filter about every 10 oil changes will assure maximum performance. Some will say this is too frequent and very well may be, depending on your local terrain ( dirt roads, sand,farming,city, etc.) and you'll have to be the judge on that. Quickie oil changers make their money on peripherals - filters, additives, etc. and many times will tell you a filter needs changed when it doesn't. The general rule of thumb on filters is this;
If you hold the filter up and look through it at the sun or bright light and see light through it then it is still good, but if lots of junk falls out of it then it's time to replace.

Those cabin air filters should be changed every 20,000 miles especially if you live in a dusty area.

How to install filter

Oil Filter, Air filter or cabin filter?
Oil is done at the same time as changing the oil; it's a simple unscrew it, make sure the mating engine surface is clean (you don't want to leave any part of the old gasket behind), spread a couple of drops of oil on the gasket of the new filter, and screw it back in. Air filter is open the air box, take the old filter out, put the new one in, close the air box. Cabin filter depends on the car for location, but it's also a take out, put in new.
It does help us if you include Year, Make and Model of your car or truck and which filter you want to change.

When I run defrost, there is a bad moldy smell. Only happens on defrost setting. Is there a filter to change somewhere?

The condensation is not completely draining. You may want to see if it is plugged. Find the drain area in the engine compartment on the bottom of the firewall. Use an air compressor to blow air back through to clear it. I had a problem with that area which was a ford expedition design flaw. It was draining onto my O2 Sensor and damaging it. I had to make a bypass with a part form a GM truck.

Where is the cabin air filter located for the air conditioner?

Instructions To Replace Cabin Air Filter 2001 LS Things You'll Need
  • Pliers Screwdriver Clean damp cloth Handheld vacuum
    • 1

Locate the cabin air filter container on your Lincoln LS. Looking at the engine from the front, you will find the casing on the left side against the back firewall. The cabin air filter is mounted vertically and is approximately 6 by 9 inches and about 2 inches deep.

    • 2

Remove the cowling cover by pushing in the black cover pins and lightly prying the cover off with a screwdriver. Lift the filter out of the container.

    • 3

Vacuum the inside of the container to remove any dust or debris. Wipe down the inside and outside of the container and lid with a clean damp cloth, then dry it off completely.

    • 4

Insert the new cabin air filter into the container and check to make sure it is seated properly. Cover the container by putting the lid back on and gently pushing down to make sure the pins click into place.

Low air flow from air conditioner, someone said there may be a filter to change?

It's called a Cabin Air Filter. Not sure of the exact location in the cab, but places like Jiffy Lube have them in stock and change them all the time. Wall mart and Auto Zone type stores sell them also.

SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHTCAME ON. iT HAS 76000

The computer probably needs to be reset. there is a procedure for it somewhere but the quick easy way is to just disconnect the battery for a few minutes, This usually resets the computer and solves intermittant issues. Also, the air conditioning may be as simple as replacing the cabin air filter. My 2000 Lincontinental had the same issue only it would blow hot air. A local ripoff mechanic charged me 250.00 to look at the a/c after he cut a line into and had to replace it at my cost. he said I needed a new system for $1700.00. I walked away without using his "service" Later I checked the air cabin filter and found it was completely clogged. I replaced it for $30.00 and the air started blowing cold immediately. The cabin air filter is located under the hood. The plastic trim that is under the windshielf wipers has air channels in it. On the left side is where the cabin air filter is located. The best way to do it is to get someone else to change it at one of these quick lube places.
