We have a 2008 elantra with an autmatic transmission. For quite a while now when accelerating, occasionally the car's transmission sort of make and unhealthy 'jump' into the next gear (I think between 2rd and 4th gear) especially when accererating quickly. Took it to the dealer and said that they checked it but could not find anything (especially since there were no warning lights on). It still continues to do it and lately it has developed a new problem. After putting the car in park (say on a hill) the car start rolling forward or back a foot or so making a clunking gear-like sound. Is this a common problem with these cars? The car has about 66,000 miles and is a nice car, but I am a bit worried about the transmission. Can you make any suggetions, Ben

Check the oil level with engine running and reverse gear selected handbrake on ,as for the park pawl well this is another problem and i would remove the rear brake drums and manualy adjust teh automatic brake adjusters so the vehicle cannot move .Now if the oil level is ok and the problem is still their with the auto box then i would remove the autobox and fit a manual gearbox ,here in spain a autogearbox on a car is referred to as carril de abuela ,,,,, granny wagon to non spanish speakers

When I turn on the car and start driving it will

NEED check engine light code. just shooting in the dark, but it could be your throttle position sensor or the gear indicator (some times called neutral safety switch). to try and reset it (works on some models) when its doing this (giving you grief). pull over to the side of the road when safe and shut off the car (put in park) then press the accelerator all the way to the floor for 30 seconds. then start the car (take foot off of accelerator first) might cure the problem. engine error code would be most helpfull

2000 vw jetta 1.8 automatic shifts hard between 3rd and 4th gear

Shop for a rebuilt transmission, or get an estimate from AAMCO for a rebuild job, but it won't be cheap. Get at least 3 estimates before you decide how to proceed. Good luck.
