My Toyota Previa after sitting for a few days takes about 3 minutes before reverse gear will work. Checked Automatic tranny oil when hot and is correct - forward gears work ok Thanks Graham

Try to change the trans oil and filter possibly need to change, looks like a transmission shift solenoid is the problem or trans computer the oil and temperature will get it last longer also but would likely recommend to have it diagnose by a transmission specialist to fine what causing it

will millions of transmissions "A/t fail all other the world. endless'
at 250,000 miles if lucky that far. no miles told (car/tranny)
not told this
what does the tranny do (PRNDL)
in reverse and (told)
in DRIVE (yes stick in low )_ but what is rpm now.????? stuck low or screaming in 1st gear . a weak engine will be low rpm in 1st gear.
and low,
no country told and is a super key factor on scan tools , got one?
we can scan all ours (USA) 1996 up every one.
tranny fails hot and cold
tranny filter ok?
if the PCM sees solenoid errors. (scanned) it will not upshift.
if the PCM seen speed sensors fail it can not upshift.
need I go on there are 50 more cause.
but most are leaking seals in the box and the poor atf pump can not handle that.(most boxes die of this latter end of life event)"
internal leaks)
steps 1 to 5
1: fuses good
2: levels good. hot in park, idling
3: scan the PCM for TCM errors.
4: check shift linkage for bad.
5: to the pump port pressure tests PRNDL per the service manual
above asssumes engine is good,is it? not weak as a cat or in silly
TBW limphome .(limited) scans tell this ,why skip scans/?
LOTS OF CAUSES, HERE ARE 3.
it needs full service
check the line pressure points, per the service manual
do not over fill the tranny
IN park , idling , fully hot engine., between Cold and Hot mark is safe.
checked like that
I have had a few cars that reverse went out. Its always been same reason the tranny is going out and reverse is usually the 1st gear to go out the other gears will go out too but no telling how long it will take I had a charger that had no reverse for a few months before I lost another gear it took about 4 or5 months before tranny finally locked up this is rare they usually don't take so long to go out. I also had a car that reverse went out and within a few days the tranny locked up. I could be wrong but my experience has always been when lost reverse tranny is bad and will need replaced.

this means that inside the gear box one of the plates were put in back to front i had the same problem a few years back im just not sure which plate (cog) it is if its the front or back plate have an mechanic have a look
I suspect that changing the tranny oil will not solve your problem. At best when the pan is removed to change the oil filter you will probably find clutch parts in the sump. However having said that take it to a tranny shop and have the pressures tested before doing anything else
if it isnt low on transmission oil your reverse gear solinoid needs to be changed take but i suggest you check where your leak is comming from id say it would be tha pan gasket
