Try putting the truck into reverse before going into neutral, then put it into 4-lo. Sounds like the transfer case linkage might need to be adjusted, nothing major. I've owned NUMEROUS Jeeps, and every one with an auto tranny was a PITA to get into 4-lo. And if it isn't engaged completely, it will pop out every time.
just tried it and it still grinds. It stays in 4Lo but as soon as i press the gas then it just grinds, kinda sounds like a bicycle with a card placed on the back wheels that makes a loud tapping noise lol and the more gas i press the louder the sound. Once the gas is press it still grinds as i put it into neutral and also going from 4Lo to Neutral but in 4All-Time its fine again.
I even started the truck in 4 Lo and its fine until i press the gas, so is that a linkage? or something else?
I'm going to stick with linkage. Those transfer cases (I think you have an NV225?) are damn near indestructable. Try pulling the handle for the transfer case up a little beyond 4-lo and see if you can get it to engage. Like I said earlier, EVERY ONE of the automatic Jeeps I've ever owned, and there have been many, has been a royal pain to get into 4-lo, and even harder to KEEP in 4-lo.
i think mine is a NV247. My Jeep is a 1999 Grand Cherokee Limited V8 quadra-trac 2.

Any advice on how that linkage can be fixed? if i were to bring it to a mechanic just for the labor what part would i need to buy to repair the transfer case linkage? thx
I don't think you'll need to buy ANY parts. I believe it's just a matter of ADJUSTING the linkage so that when you throw the shifter it fully engages the 4-lo gear in the TC.
thanks i will give that a shot, and post the results!!
Good luck to ya. Keep the rubber side down.
