Q1: What to do if my "Check Engine" light is on?
A1: The simplest way is to visit your local dealer for proper diagnostic. They have all the equipment and information needed to correct the problem. The problem might even be covered by the manufacturers warranty and possibly repaired free of charge.

Q2: Is it safe to drive if my "Check Engine" light is on?
A2: It really depends what code is stored and what caused it. In worst cases driving with "Check engine" light may cause more damage to the vehicle. A car may even stall while driving. If your check engine light came on, I'd certainly recommend to visit your dealer or a mechanic as soon as possible, just to be on a safe side. If the Check Engine light is flashing, this means that the engine computer (ECM) has detected that your engine is misfiring, which could damage your catalytic converter. Have the your vehicle inspected as soon as possible.

One suggestion I have is that each of the new type of engine's have an O2 sensor which is part of the exhaust. This is used by the computer to measure the amount of O2 in the exhaust gasses in the exhaust.

Lifters/car not starting

Do you have the 2.2 liter Ecotec 4-cylinder engine, the 3.5 liter V6, or the 3.9 liter V6 engine? If you have the 2.2 liter engine, there may be a camshaft/timing chain issue if you skipped a tooth when you put the chain back on the cams. If it's a 3.5 or a 3.9 liter V6, you may have incorrectly installed the push rods back into the engine. 3.5 liter intake push rods are approx 5 3/4" long, while the exhaust push rods are approx 6" long.
The 3.9 liter intake push rods are approx 5.81" long, while the exhaust push rods are approx 6.1" long. If you mix the two lengths up when you put them back in the engine, you're going to have problems.

My SERVICE ENGINE SOON light came onAGAIN!

Disconnecting the battery should reset it but I would bet that the light will come back on. I would have a auto parts store read the error code for you. They can also reset it. There are two o2 sensors on this car one on the manifold and one down stream from the converter. If you are getting an o2 error code it could also be the converter.

My "Check Engine Light" has gone on periodically

From what you are describing i feel you might be having an bad EGR valve..It only causes the rough idle and shaking and fuel smell in exhaust..It can also cause back firing. Does it happen? Also do you hear any popping noise from exhaust?

Check engine light on, replaced oxygen sensor before catalyst,

  • Water or corrosion in the connector
  • Loose terminals in the connector
  • Wiring burnt on exhaust components
  • Open or short in the wiring due to rubbing on engine components
  • Holes in exhaust allowing unmetered oxygen into exhaust system
  • Unmetered vacuum leak at the engine
  • Bad o2 sensor
  • Bad PCM
