Ford Focus Towbar Wiring

Piggy back the new on to the old one.

take it to an accredited auto electrician to have the reverse sensor disconnected when the trailer is connected as the sensors are seeing the trailer when reversing and that is why they are beeping

Towbars are fairly simple, if the towbar fits the frame, you are all set, if it doesn't, you have the wrong one. If there are holes that line up, use them, if not, you can drill through the frame very easily, it is soft steel, Put some bolts in there that go through about 1/2 longer than the frame parts. Support the towbar with a jack, make sure it stays put. Drill a small pilot hole first with about 1/4 inch bit, then go to the hole size of the towbar, 1/2 inch. Those step bits work great, put in the bolts, tighten them up, all set. As far as positioning this thing, I would make the ball stick out just past the bumper, if no hole line up. You don't want to be smashing the trailer into the bumper all the time, so make sure it is enough, but not so much that you trip over it. Hope this helps.

Loosen and pull back the carpeting in the back of the trunk behind the taillights.

Step 2 Remove the plastic wingnuts that secure the taillight to the vehicle's body.

Step 3 Separate the taillights from the vehicle's body, but do not disconnect the wiring.
Installing the Connector

Step 1 Examine the wiring harness on each taillight. There will be a plastic connector on each side that must be separated to insert the wiring harness connector.

Step 2 Thread the trailer wiring connectors through holes in the body behind each taillight. Follow the instructions provided with the connector to determine which connector belongs in which side of the vehicle.

Step 3 Insert the wiring connectors into the vehicle's wiring harness.
Reinstalling the Taillights

Step 1 Push the taillights into position against the body and reinstall the plastic wingnuts that secure them. Be careful not to crush the wiring.

Step 2 Route the trailer wiring underneath the carpeting in the trunk, so that the trailer connector can extend out between the trunk lid and bumper when in use, and be tucked into the trunk when not in use.

Step 3 Reposition the trunk carpet over the taillight housing.

On the left inside the boot behind the carpet is a blue connector, this has all of the wires for the rear lights. if you use a test lamp you can identify which wires do what and connect as you go. Use a self tapping screw for earth.

The connectors for towing wire harnesses on foresters are generally on the passenger side, below the rear taillight inside the cargo space. some require pulling up the foam block that is between the spare tire compartment and the taillight. Check where you replace the tailights from inside the car, if there isn't a matching connector hanging out there, check around the spare tire compartment, see if you can remove the carpeted foam block next to the compartment and find the plug under there.

i wiried up my focus estate with the following no relays needed as the wiring is protected by the car fuses
pin 1.yellow/left hand indicator
pin 2.blue fog light
pin 3.white/earth
pin 4.right hand indicator
pin 5.brown/right hand tail light
pin 6.red/ brake lights
pin 7. black left hand tail light
connect these to the car wiring with scotch locks as follows/red/blue.right hand indicator/blue.left hand indicator,green/black,left hand indicator,red/green,right hand indicator,orange right hand light,orange and white,left hand lights, finally green/yellow fog light

probably you have to open the tail light bulb and connect the wire there
