1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4wd v6. Car would not start. We change the crank shaft position sensor and the car started with no problem. 1 month later when we start the car the check engine light comes on and the car run rough for about 5 minutes. I went to Auto zone to have them pull the code and got: P1391 CMO or CKP signal intermittent condition. The ECM detected the actual CMP position disagreed with the expected CMP level. 1. Timing belt or chain stretched or jumped. 2. Defective CMP sensor Is the cam position sensor the same as the crank shaft position sensor? If not where is the cam position sensor at or could it be something else?

intermittent loss of ckp or cmp.problem is in the distributor.make sure rotor not loose or distributor hold down bolt loose.camsensor on the distributor.also check to see if crank sensor is loose and out of adjustment.

SOURCE: I went to auto zone

one is the crank sensor,m the other is the cam sensor-which was it? you should get the actual code so there is no doubt, if you are having a hard time getting it started, it is probably a crank sensor, if it only manifests itself when running it could be either crank or cam sensor.

I would change the TPS throttle position sensor and the Map/MAF are you sure its not the mass air flow?. I think your computer is fine it could be have a loose ground issues but computers dont go bad.

1996 jeep grand Cherokee will turn over but not start. weak spark. fuel at fuel rail. replaced PCM 1 month ago. replaced crank shaft sensor 3 months ago....

See if your getting spark at the ign. coil first (passengers side on that year) if you are change the crank shaft sensor making sure you mount it as close to the engine as possible so it never gives you trouble again.

My name is Patricia Taynor my 1996 grand cherokee is not getting any spark to start we replaced the coil but what else can i do ?

I think it is the CPS "crank shaft position sensor" If this sensor goes out, it don't know what position the crank is in so therefore it will not fire. This is a BIG problem with the cherokee. The part is about $60 and usually located where the transmission meets the back of the engine. Very easy to replace. Since I'm not there it's not 100% sure but I would not be scared to say 95% since it is an issue. Good Luck...

96 jeep grand cherokee limited v-8. changed fuel filter, pump, coil, distrib. cap, when going over 50 -60 with press. on it starts to spit and sputter like not getting enough fuel. any suggestions someone said...

I could be the CKP (crank sensor), but it could also be several other factors including the TPS. The correct way to start a diagnosis would be to see if any trouble codes are stored in memory. I'm assuming all basic ignition components are ok ; spark plugs, etc.

1998 Jeep Cherokee -- car won't start. Turns over

have scanned to find problem code to get an idea of what it is. .it may either be the crank or cam sensor, check the crank sensor first. if it is bad it sends wrong timing info to pcm. therefore jeep will not start!! It is either the camshaft or crankshaft positioner. I would check the crank pos. first. Zach Cabot, AR

1996 jeep grand chrokee turns over will not start, replaced cam shaft censor and ECM, and coil. distibuter cap looks bad has some white dust inside and contacts burnt. could it be that?

If you did not replace the CRANK sensor on the back side of the motor this most likely is the problem and a very common one at that.this controls spark and injector pulse, unlike the cam sensor which just shows when #1 cilyder is up.

1996 4.0 litre petrol cherokee cranks but not start

5 volts is correct. Those sensors work off of a 5 volt reference signal.
