Congratulations...you've got a BMW with a GM 4L30 transmission. Same transmission they put in a Cadillac Catera.....no dipstick to tell where the fluid level is. So, BMW, in their infinite wisdom, labled the fluid, "lifetime" There's no such thing as lifetime lubricant for anything let alone a transmission. But BMW owners will believe anything the dealer tells them. Rots of Ruck.
SOURCE: The other day my car wouldn't go in reverse, but
Check transmission fluid level, When car is at full opeating tempeature.

Because your problem is intermittent it is very difficult to diagnose. This is the classic take it to the shop and the problem goes away till you drive it home again. I would start with checking for loose connections, you would need an electrical diagram to see how the ignition is actuated. Is there a crankshaft or flywheel sensor? Is the cap and rotor good. A common Ford problem is the ignition module it wouldn't hurt to change it (around $30) With intermittent problem sometimes you just start changing the most obvious/cheap parts and work your way up the food chain. Good luck!
SOURCE: Just bought a vw jetta.
A standard tranny can get stuck in gear while in reverse position, like somebody slammed it into second and the linkage hit reverse instead. Could be minor, then again, It could be major. I hope it is a standard you are talking about, If it is automatic, then no, there is no switch or fuse for this, it has shift solenoids in the valve body that do the shifting, mostly electric now days, a ground wire off could cause this but I doubt it. I would get a hold of the seller and give him back his car. Hope this helps, Tranny work is $1200 minimum.
