Hi I wonder if you assist me. I have a Fiat Multipla 2002 1.9 JTD with 58500 miles. A problem has developed recently whereby when putting the car into 3rd gear, the gearknob slips back into Neutral. It has done this repeatedly over a 24 hr period. What's up with the bloody thing?!!

In all these cases it appear to be a problem with the synchronizers or a dented pinion. To verify, the oil can be check for metal deposits. Fiats have bronze synchronizers and when placed under heavy shifting load they were out rapidly. if this is the case replacement is the solution and transmission has to be open. The car can be driven but gear will keep releasing. Sometimes the synchronizer level bends causing an incomplete setting off the gear.

You have a bad wheel bearing. It is a double row roller bearing, side-by-side rows. One to the inside and one to the outside. When you steer side to side, the load transfers from one set of rollers to the other. When steering to the right, the load shifts to the left side. The side of the car where the noise is most pronounced is probably the suspect side.
