I have a 2002 pontiac Grand prix GTP and have been told it needs a mass air flow sensor, I also have a 1997 parts car. Can I use the mass air flow sensor from the parts car on the 2002? both cars are GTP
so they are not interchangeable? what years are interchangeable with the 2002 GTPso they are not interchangeable? what years are interchangeable with the 2002 GTP

Sure. But it sounds more like a clogged fuel filter. Or even a failing fuel pump.
It could also be electrical in nature. Bad coils.
Even bad mass air flow sensors, air temp sensors. Could be a million things.
Sounds like you usually start it up and stand on the accelerator. You need to treat cars well, and maintain them.
There is no quick fix for your issue, except to get it fixed correctly now and treat the car like a machine, and not a toy.
Sorry Donnie-Bo. Time to grow up.
I would replace the TPS sensor. If you have fuel pressure enough to start the car, then you probably have pressure always. Before turning the key to start, turn to ON. You should hear the fuel pump pressurizing the lines. Turn the car back off. Go under the hood and remove the cap to the Schrader Valve. Use a rag to catch any fuel when you depress the valve stem. If fuel comes out into your rag, you should have pressure. Try this a second time to be sure. I had this issue with my car shutting down. TPS sensor replacement fixed it. BUT...it could be vacuum lines, or another sensor fault. The TPS is a common issue. You may also want to clean your Mass Air Flow sensor with the proper solvent and technique.
you don't have to replace the mass air flow sensor, CRC makes a mass air flow sensor cleaner i would try that first but if it doesn't work then you'll need to replace it
I would check the idle air control valve before replacing anything. The computer regulates the idle speed by controlling the amount of air entering the intake thru the throttle body. The valve could be faulty, or the throttle body can be gummed up. Is the check engine light on ?
u don't replace the whole sensor just the actual heated wire part, that is held in place by two star screws, see picture.

Hello! This indicates a fault with the wheel speed sensor/ABS sensor. Any major auto parts retailer can pull the details of this code (which sensor) for free, which will help you identify if the wiring is loose or damaged or if the sensor will need to be replaced. If you need to replace the sensor - you will need to replace the entire wheel bearing assembly, as the sensor is internal.
If you have a GTP these engines use a hi output fuel pump. they use a fuel pump resistor located under the battery tray (look up from under the car) This resistor lowers the voltage to the fuel fump when not in boost mode. because of its locatoin it is prone to corrosion. if you bypass the wires and the engine starts and stays running replace the resistor
