As I explained my battery is Ok also my startmachine, my problem is that i can`t start the motor and why the last time since i was driving started blinking the "m" and "s" lights on my front panel.
The only reason for that problem is the battery? wich test must I perform to detect any other problem?

  • Anonymous Nov 16, 2010

I did what you suggested, battery is ok. fuses also, but still cannot start my Landrover Discovery II 2000,

If I had a warning from the lights "s" and "m" in order to discharged possibilities what else can I do? and if I get a Tester it is possible to become an answer whitout runnig the engine?
    Thanks in advance

Have you been having battery and or low voltage issues? If so this can trip the lights and not be the tranny. Get the codes read as well as have your charging system checked, voltage has to be between 13.6 and 14.4 volts.

Before we throw parts at the trans ( although xzy switches have failed on a few cars ) have someone read out the trans codes first! Parts are expensive! Could be a speed sensor, slipping clutches, open circuit in the valve body, a failing mass air flow sensor, and yes a xyz switch as well. even if you have to pay someone to read them out, it's a lot cheaper then assuming what it could or might be.

The "service engine" light will illuminate if the trans is storing trouble codes as well as the engine ecu. If your "service engine" light is on and there are no codes in the engine ecu, check the trans ecu for codes cause maybe thats why the light is on. M & S lights flashing are a sign that there is a problem occuring at that very moment with the trans. There are many faults the trans ecu is capable of recognizing, read them out before you assume what it could or might be.

A low battery condition can set a fault in the engine and trans, but I have never seen it turn on the warning lights in the 10 years i have worked on disco's. One thing is for sure - A low battery will cause mayhem with anything electric, be sure you have a good one and rated for the aplication.

When I say XYZ switch, I'm refering to device located on the drivers side of the trans, look for the shifter cable, where it connects to the transmission. It is held on by two 10mm bolts, and a 13mm nut to disconnect the cable from the selector shaft, and an electrical connector. This is what tells the computer what gear you are in. I've seen a lot of these go bad and cause what you are explaining, sometimes the trans goes into limp mode also.

Keep us updated.

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

As a first course of action, I strongly suggest that you remove the positive battery connector and let it sit for atleast 30mins. to reset the system. Sometimes the computer needs to relearn itself to get rid of this issue.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Yes you can try the tester. Just turn the ignition on ON position but don't crank it.

Usually the problem is caused by a bad battery terminals. Does the vehicle run ok once you get it started? It could also be the electronic accelerator pedal.

You need to get the fault code scanned to be able to get an idea of where the problem is. It's possible you have a coil pack that goes bad when it heats up.
