Brake drums How do I remove the rear drum on my 2004 Aveo?

Sometimes the drums are a press fit to the rear axle look for two holes on the out side of the drums if they are there you can get bolts that will thread into these holes and that will back the drum off the axle If not look on the back of the brake mounting plate the thing the brake shoes are attached toYou;ll see a rubber plug on the bottom take it out Most cars with drum brakes in the rear have a system that self adjusts the shoes every time you are backing up and hit the brakes Look inside the hole that you took the plug out of and there will be a gear inside its called a star wheelturn this wheelwith ascrew driver up or down depending on witch side of the vehicle your on one turns left handed and the other turns right handed so turn it so it gets losser This will release the force on the drum and it will come off with ease good luck

you are going to have to access the hole in the back of the hub with a screwdriver and back off the self adjuster.

The inside of the drum looks like the below pic. The adjuster is the long horizontal cylinder above the axle. It has a gear on it. Stick your screwdriver in and turn the gear until the drum loosens.

Once you have the rear wheels removed and the back of the vehicle safely supported, then inspect the drum.If there is (there might not be) shiny brass looking phillips head screw bolts on the face of the drum, then remove those by turning them counterclockwise.If there is no screws, or you already removed them, then your next step is to take a fairly heavy hammer( at least a 2lb ) a firmly hit the face of the drum to shock it loose from the hub assembly.Be careful not to hit the studs , you can damage them.Keep on with the forceful hits on the face of the drum, and alternate the hits across from each other on the face of the drum.Make sure your parking brake is not set and the drum can come off...I hope I could help!!! I'm gonna tell you how to pull this drum off, ya ready?First off, get the rear of the vehicle up in the air safely, Then pull the rear tires off.After those are off then take a gander at the face of the drums, are there shiny brass looking screws installed on the face of that drum?Ifso remove those counterclockwise, then, take a hammer a shock the face off the drum firmly about three times.Now, go to the opposite side on the face of the drum and do that again, keep on doin that until you can wiggle the drum off by hand...easy as that, any other questions get back to me. I'M HERE TO HELP!!!

To remove the brake drum you'll have to try and coast the car to a stop where ever you plan to do this. If you stop using the brakes the shoes will not retract all the way making it very difficult to remove the drum. Do not set the parking brake either as this will cause the shoes to prevent the drum from sliding off.

Raise and support the vehicle
Remove the desired wheel
Use a rubber mallet from behind the drum and knock it off.

If you intend to replace the shoes and do not have a service manual I suggest you use the other side as a model when installing the new shoes.

Normally, remove tire, then just remove drum. Sometimes, for manufaturing purposes, they have some small copper colored clips on the studs that are used to keep the drum in place during shipping, before tires are mounted. You can remove these and discard.

Emergency brakes must not be set to remove drum, and sometimes you must work the drum back and forth to get it off. Also, can make it easier to remove if you adjust the brakes backwards, so they are not so tight.

Have you used the e-brake? If so try to rotate the e-brake around they sometimes get crroded insie the housing and stay applied. You can als try to hit the back of the drum with a hammer and it may free up.

move the nut and hit the drum untill you see some movement then try to move it back if still give you hard time there is adjuster in the back of the drum try to loose it to make the drum free

1.Release parking brake.
2. Apply the brake pedal at least 10 times.
3. Raise and support vehicle with jack stands, etc.
4. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
5. Remove the lock ring and the caulking nut from the spindle.
6. Remove the drum from the spindle.
Note: Pull the drum straight off the spindle.

There is an opening on the inside for adjusting the tension,It's under a rubber cap.You can use a screw driver to make the adjustment

Jack up rear of car till tire is off the ground.
Remove lug nuts & remove wheel.
Remove phillips screw(s) from drum.
Using a hammer, strike the drum to loosen it from the hub.
Remove drum by simutaneously turning it and pulling it outward away from the vehicle.
