I had a hole patched in the gas tank of a 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid. Now the fuel gauge doesn't work and the engine light is on.

Yes, they did remove the tank to repair it. The fuel gauge has not worked since it left the shop; we noticed the problem when we filled it up.

When the engine light is on you have a problem detected by the computer on your vehicle which could be related to the fuel gauge not reading correctly or not at all. You can go to the local parts store and they will read your codes generally for free. You can post the codes they read on here and we can try and help you out. Did they take your fuel tank out from under the vehicle to repair it? If so they may not have hooked up the connector on top of the fuel tank so the sender will work. Did it work at all after they did the work? var fctb_tool=null; function FCTB_Init_afc0274c10a74ee6baea7ce7c5283487(t) { fctb_tool=t; start(fctb_tool); }

If the gauge isn't working it's something that the person did or didn't do. The light is probably on because of the evap system, wasn't repaired properly. I know tanks can be costly, but I would replace it. Try a salage yard, call around, alot of times these yards are linked nation wide. If the gauge was broken it will cost you a new pump and sending unit.(one unit)

2008 ford escape hybrid idle too high

If you do not have a check engine light on you may have an issue with the electronic throttle control system, repair requires the system be scanned to see why it is idling to high. If you do have a check engine light on have the system tested for fault codes.

Check engine light on my Ford escape.

I would say, check the plug of the EGR. Check for holes in the gas filler tube, top of the tank or in the vacuum lines that run to the purge canister. You can also check for information on the purge solenoid.
A bad gas cap can cause this too.

I thought my 2008 Escape 2.3L 4cyl could run on E85, but when I got through the 1st 1/4 tank, my ck eng lite came on. Is this a result of the fuel or something else?

I don't think any of fords four cylinders are e85 compliant. The escape 3.0 liter didn't become e85 compliant until 2010 if you vehicle was e85 compliant it would have a flex fuel emblem on the side of it and it would have a sticker on the fuel door. Your check engine light is most likely because of the e85. If it's running ok. Burn of that tank and then return to regular gas. The check engine light should go out after a couple of fill ups.

I have 2008 Ford Escape engine light come on check code PO 455 and PO457 and I smell gas inside car while driving.

this is an obd2 trouble code table, it can help you understand the meaning of code,
and for p0455:
Causes:
A code p0455 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:
A loose or improperly affixed gas cap
A non-conforming gas cap (i.e. not factory/original brand)
Other leak or damaged piece in EVAP system
Possible Solutions:
With a p0455, the most common repair is to:
Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
Otherwise, replace the gas cap, and/or
Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses (you may hear a vacuum noise or smell fuel), repair if necessary
for p0457:
The only way a P0457 can set by itself is if the gas cap is left loose, assuming the van is in working order. when the engine controller sees a large increase in fuel level it knows you put some in the tank, and it runs the evaporative emissions system test to see if the system is sealed. If it sees a large leak it knows the cap was left off and sets the P0457. If you are positive the cap wasn't left even a little bit loose you may have a leak back there. It could be in the filler neck, from the tank to the evaporative emissions canisters just behind the subframe on the left side, and from there on up to the right front corner of the engine compartment where the purge solenoid is. If you don't see any leaks you probably have a bad NVLD, the unit that checks the system for leaks. This is probably what you are going to find.
The pressure or vacuum in the fuel tank when you remove the cap tells me that the system probably is sealed and has no leaks. Many times there will either be a little bit of pressure or vacuum in the tank, and it's perfectly normal.
The fuel gauge being innaccurate is either the sending unit or a problem with the pump module itself. there were some problems with some of the pump modules that allowed continuity between two of the terminals in the fuel pump connector and it caused the gauge to be wrong. You will probably end up needing to replace the fuel pump assembly for the gauge issue.
hope help.
