Oil Filter Operation:
A component, located near the oil pump, that removes abrasive particles from the motor oil by a straining process as the oil circulates through the lubrication system.
How To Instructions:
Inspect - Check for obvious problems.
Replace - Out with the old, in with the new.
Check underneath the car on the engine (not the transmission which has the driveshaft(s) inserted into it)
It's not in the oil pan, it's located somewhere on the block.

Check Autozone.com's site. I was having trouble with it, unfortunately, because they were experiencing technical diifficulty with the 'oil filter' section of their site, when I clicked on 'Replace'.
Autozone's website didn't have a location for it under the 'location' part of their website.
