My starter gave out yesterday. I didnt know it was inside the intake manifold. Either way i started the job last night, i am having a hard time pulling out the manifold. I already loosened the clamp but i cant pull it out, is there a trick?

This is great, but i need to know if there are any tricks to removing the untake manifold from the duct. Ive pulled, tugged and tried twisting as much as space allows but i cant seem to break it loose. Any advice?

  • Anonymous Nov 11, 2010

I believe its called the Plenum duct clamp. Its at the rear or on the driver side of the manifold. The clamp is loosed and i tried pulling, and twisting as much as room permits but it does not budge. Any advise?

  • Anonymous Nov 11, 2010

Do i have to worry about any damage to the intake hose or the cover itself from the screwdriver. In other words, more than likely the screwdriver will scratch the surface, will this affect its purpose, break its seal or anythung like that, or can i just go around it with the screwdriver without worry?

I am changing the starter and am having a hard time removing the intake manifold from the hose in the rear of the maniflod attached to the air intake and throttle body. I loosened the clamp and already removed all the fuel rail/lines and all the screws. All i have to do is lift and remove but i cant break it loose from the clamp. Any advise?

  • Anonymous Nov 11, 2010

The instructitons to change the starter tell me to remove the intake manifold. I had a mobile mechanic that lives by me to look at it and he also said i have to remove the intake manifold. Do you know of a way to change the starter without removing the intake manifold? its the 4.6 northstar engine.

  • Anonymous Nov 11, 2010

I understand, i'll give it a try and let you know. thanks

  • Anonymous Nov 11, 2010

Yes thats the one. All the fuel rails and injectors are off, I moved them out of the way. All bolts are off. The clamp is loose and if I try to pick up or pull the intake out the duct wont let it go. Its as if the rubber is stuck because of the heat, i guess its a matter of breaking that seal the heat created with time between the duct and the manifold. My issue is whats the best tried way to do that without damaging anything?

  • Anonymous Nov 11, 2010

Great!! thanks i'll let you know how it turns out.

  • Anonymous Nov 11, 2010

Not realy working out, is there a way i can send you a picture of what im looking at?

  • Anonymous Nov 11, 2010

is the intake boot clamp supposed to stay on the intake in order to remove the intake? because there is some sort of housing attached (part of) to the intake right under the boot clamp that doesnt let me pull the intake out. there isnt enough room because of the boot clamp.

Hi!!
These are the steps to follow to remove the Starter Motor and the Intake Manifold. If you follow them you'll have no problems when the job is done. Pay special attention to the pre-installation steps for the Intake Manifold.

To Replace the Starter, Remove or disconnect the following:

  1. Negative battery cable
  2. Intake manifold
  3. Starter electrical connectors
  4. Starter motor
View of starter motor removal and wires
My starter gave out yesterday. I didnt know it was - 1kbron_11.jpg

To install, Install or connect the following:
  1. -S- terminal wire. Torque the nut to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
  2. Starter electrical connectors. Torque the nut to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  3. Starter motor
  4. Mounting bolts. Torque the bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  5. Intake manifold
  6. Negative battery cable

INTAKE MANIFOLD
PRIOR TO REMOVAL:
  • Relieve the fuel system pressure
  • Drain the cooling system.

Remove or disconnect the following:
  1. Negative battery cable
  2. Intake manifold heat shield
  3. Sight shield
  4. Coil module connectors from the coil modules located on the valve covers
  5. Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose and valve from the valve cover
  6. Fuel regulator vacuum tube
  7. Vacuum tubes from the AIR solenoid
  8. Fuel inlet and return lines
  9. Fuel rail bracket retaining nut at the rear lift bracket
  10. 2 pushnuts attaching the engine coolant heater wire and set it aside, if equipped
  11. Fuel injector electrical connections
  12. Fuel rail and injectors
  13. Plenum duct clamp at the rear of the intake manifold, loosen Intake manifold bolts and the manifold
  14. Clean the manifold mating surfaces.

  • Grease the inside edge of the rubber plenum duct.
  • Position the intake manifold by performing the following sub-steps:
  • Place the rear of the intake manifold into the plenum duct.
  • Place the front of the intake manifold downward on to the cylinder heads.
  • Install the intake manifold bolts and torque to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm) in the sequence illustrated. DO NOT torque the intake manifold bolts when the engine is HOT or at operating temperature.
  • Make sure the plenum duct is fully attached to the rear of the intake manifold and tighten the plenum duct clamp to 20 inch lbs. (2.25 Nm).

Install or connect the following:
  1. Fuel rail and injectors and tighten the rail retainers to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
  2. Fuel injector electrical connections
  3. Alternator coolant pipe/surge tank pipe and position onto the fuel rail studs

The plenum duct clamp has to be completely loose for the plenum duct to come loose, remove it if possible, the rubber plenum duct gets stuck is hard to come loose because of the engineheat, thats why is recommended to apply grease to the tip of the inside edge of the plenum duct, just play with it, it will come loose. You can insert the screwdriver, just be careful no to damage the plenum.

  • Anonymous Nov 11, 2010

I think I know what your problem is on the removal of the manifold step 13 says to remove

Plenum duct clamp at the rear of the intake manifold,

        loosen Intake manifold bolts and

        the manifold

I believe you changed that order, you need to tighten a couple of the intake manifold bolts to get better leverage.

  • Anonymous Nov 11, 2010

Click on the following link, check page 1. it seems that all you got to do is to lift up the plenum and it pops right up once the clamp is loose. http://ww2.justanswer.com/uploads/ebrock...

  • Anonymous Nov 12, 2010

just checking if you got it out, like I said before, once the clamp is loose, the only thing that keeps it in place is the heat seal that was created over time. I never had one that was this tight. Good Luck!! and please reconsider your rating to my post!!

Clamp? you will have to remove injectors/fuel rail assembly disconnect everything from intake and unbolt intake to remove it is a pretty big job. I sdont know what clamp you are talking about, the intake boot clamp? just have to twist and maybe slide a screwdriver around it to loosen

  • Anonymous Nov 11, 2010

take a small flat blade screwdriver and slide around the duct and throttle plate to un stick it

  • Anonymous Nov 12, 2010

After you get the clamp loose then you might need to take a small screwdriver to run around the inside of the hose to free it up. Once you get that off then you will have 4 bolts that hold the intake on. There will also be a wiring harness for the fuel injection.

You are talking about the clamp on the air intake hose. Aren't you? I have the Northstar in two of my Cadillacs. And have had to replace the starters in both. And have replaced the starter in many others. I want to help you, but just need more clarification on exactly what you are talking about. I assumed it is the hose that runs from the air box to the engine.

  • Anonymous Nov 11, 2010

Like I mentioned before. I used a small thin bladed screw driver to wedge in between the hose and the air intake. Once you get it in, then you can maneuver the screw driver around and get the seal broke loose. And just keep going around the hose like that until the seal is broken all the way around.

The starter motor is not in the inlet manifold its on the bell housing /gearbox area ,Who said it was inside the manifold ,look i think the best advice i can give here is too ask a local mechanic to have a look for you and see what he says then post on here for confirmation

Change starter in 2001 cad devile

The starter on that engine is mounted between the cylinder heads under the intake manifold. You will need a set of injector O-rings and an intake manifold gasket set to do the job. It is not really hard to do, but a bunch of stuff has to come loose to get the manifold off.
HINT: The gasket surfaces for the intake manifold are very easy to clean up in preparation of re-installing the manifold if you use some rags and carburetor cleaner.

My 2006 pontiacgrand prix is leaking coolant right above the water pump. There is an L shaped pipe that seems to be where the leak is coming from. Does anyone know what this piece is and how hard it is to...

This was a common issue with these engines. Unfortunately there is no easy way to fix this problem other than to remove the intake manifold and replace this plastic tube along with the intake manifold gasket itself, these engines were common for the intake manifold gaskets leaking and also for that tube to crack over time and start to leak as well.

Like i stated, unfortunately there is no real "easy" fix for your problem. I have replaced many of these tubes and many intake manifold gaskets on these engines. I would not recommend doing it yourself unless you are familiar with these engine, there are special torque specifications for all the bolts. I do know that the intake manifold repair job usually runs somewhere in the ballpark of $800 - $1000 or more depending on where you take it.

Hope this helps...

Need some help to change the starter in a 2003 Cadillac Deville

Take you time. Mark all of your bolts. Have your new starter ready. Do the whole job at one time. Don't give your self time to forget. Find the starter, look from the lf of the car next to the intake down in the valley of the engine. You should see it. Now everything above it has to come off. Good Luck!

Truck starts occassionally.

You need to replace the starter solenoid contacts, or the starter itself.

Note that the starter is UNDER the intake manifold. This is a VERY difficult job, and is not recommended to those who do not have sufficient automotive experience.

If you DO remove the intake, you MUST replace the intake manifold gaskets, or your engine will not run properly, due to air leaks at the intake mating surfaces.

there is the couple or ways you can get to the starter that doesnt require the manifold coming off just enough lift on the car so that you can get to the starter easily the starter should be accessible threw the wheel well with long socket extension with bendy bar extender to get to the bolts then the starter should drop down ive done 4 fords in my life and i did a 2002 cougar i didnt have to take off the manifold i just had to have car lifted high enough to get into area where bolts were then slide the starter out threw wheel well
