My vehicle lost power at highway speed and cut out. The engine still turns over freely and all electrical mechanisms appear to be working properly. I have surmised the engine is not getting fuel. The fuel filter was replaced in january and i have NOT noticed other issues associated with filter plugging such intermittant loss of power or poor starting or any other chronic issues. this is a one time incident so far what could some of the possible problems?

Hello Mg.

Basic diagnostics first. Check for spark and fuel pressure.
Then compression test.
I am suspect the timing belt may have broken or skipped some teeth from your description of failure.
If the belt has broken you will have no spark, no injector pulse and low compression.
If the belt has skipped you may still have spark and injector pulse but compression will remain low or none.
This engine I believe is a non-interference engine so if the belt breaks it should not damage internal parts.
If you need more assistance on this leave them in a comment to me.

I have a 2001 mack ch 613 model speedometer stops working while iam driving and looser power then speedometer starts working and power comes back on

There are a few possible causes for your issue, but the most likely is a faulty speed sensor. The speed sensor is responsible for detecting the speed of the vehicle and sending that information to the instrument cluster to display it on the speedometer. If the sensor is malfunctioning or failing, it can cause the speedometer to stop working and the engine to lose power. Once the sensor is working properly again, the speedometer will start working and the power will come back on. Other potential causes for this issue could be a wiring problem, a faulty instrument cluster, or a problem with the engine control module. However, a faulty speed sensor is the most common cause. To fix the issue, you should take your vehicle to a mechanic and have them diagnose and repair the problem. They may need to replace the speed sensor or perform other repairs to get your vehicle functioning properly again.

A sudden loss of power like the engine was turned off (or short in electrical system suppling power to plugs), then, a slight surge, power restored. 'Short' is intermittent. Occurs at high speeds, but more...

It is possible, in fact likely, that your ECU (main computer) is failing. Less likely, you may have a bad oxygen sensor or other bad sensor. Best first step is take the car to your local auto parts store and have them use an ODB reader to determine the error causing your Check Engine light to be on.

Keeps cutting out on highway

More than likely it is one of 2 things. At higher speeds, your vehicle requires more fuel and with the year of your vehicle, it appears to be (a) Fuel Filter or (b) Fuel Pump. The Test for this is the same, Put a Fuel Pressure Gauge on the Fuel Rail and get a reading. It should be in the neighborhood of 40-44 PSI. The problem is if the Fuel Filter is blocked, it will reduce the Fuel pressure also. So you have to put the In-Line Tester on. If the Pressure is HIGHER Before the Filter then you have your answer. If there is no change and the pressure is Low... It is the Pump.

I have a 1999 TERRANO QD32ETI engine and the problem which the local agents and private mechanics cannot solve is that when it's on the highways the engine performs well; that is it accelerates perfectly. However, when the vehicle comes to a dead stop, and you go for a quick take off the engine cuts out; it restarts quickly; now, when you make a slow acceleration after stopping the engine does not stall, but this can be a dangerous situation when crossing traffic on the highway or moving off from the traffic lights. We checked the computer, fuel pump and the injectors; our opinions differ and somehow
we feel the problem may be the fuel pump. We would appreciate your comments. Our many thanks for your kind assistance. Thanks Tony.

Mazda Tribute 2002 engine cuts out randomly

I had a Mazda 626 with a similar problem, the car seemed to 'shut down' with no warning, even at highway speeds, as if I just turned the ignition key to 'Off'; After trying to fix it unsuccessfully by replacing several electrical parts, the problem was found to be a defective ignition switch, it was replaced and the problem went away.

I have a 2003 excursion 6.0 diesel engine cuts out at 60-70 mph

Whne I worked at Ford , they had problems with the accelerator pedat electronic switch. The pedal is not connected to the engine with a cable, but with an electrical connection. You would have to have a scanner put on your vehicles computer and check for any trouble codes. Also give the Ford dealer your VIN # and they can check for recalls for that problem.

Fuel Cutoff Mode
The PCM cuts OFF fuel from the fuel injectors when the following conditions are met in order to protect the powertrain from damage and improve driveability:
  • The ignition is OFF. This prevents engine run-on.
  • The ignition is ON but there is no ignition reference signal. This prevents flooding or backfiring.
  • The engine speed is too high, above red line.
  • The vehicle speed is too high, above rated tire speed.
  • During an extended, high speed, closed throttle coast down-This reduces emissions and increases engine braking.
  • During extended deceleration, in order to prevent damage to the catalytic converters
