I own a 2000 xj8. Always treated transmission with respect. Up to this point trans working to perfection. Last Friday felt 3 small clunks and transmission fail light came on. Drove to Jag with 50% acceleration but arrived fine. Jag said code p1722 was read and you need a new transmission. Car well maintained and don't want to junk. Promised to my 13 year old.
HELP PLEASE.
Best Regards,
John

This is more than likely in your transmission, if your engine revved to 4000rpm and your speed did not increase. Is this a manual or automatic transmission. If the vehicle is newer, within the last 10 years, you could probably have the controller for the transmission plugged in and get the codes for the problem.

get a rebuilt or used transmission. Jaguar says you don't have to change trans fluid because it should last the "life of the trans" which means it will die just like everything else. Fluid change will do no good. I just went thru this.
In your owners manual there is a phone number to file a complaint to the corporation. Do that first of all. I owned a Hyundai that did very strange things although I had strange braking problems which was repaired at a shop of my preference and was reimbursed. The problem with yours has to be an internal transmission problem. Nothing will be found unless the transmission is removed and completely torn apart for inspection. More than likely a brass bushing is egged out making the trans to act so eractic
Do this first. have the oil and filter changed, Then see what happens. The trans can be rebuilt but oil and filter chage will be pennies against the cost of a XJ8 overhaul. It's your calYou can make a better decision when the pan is dropped. Whatever is settled in the pan will tell you what to do. Good Luck -Ned- Don't tske it to AAMCO
Take the car to a transmission specialist and check the engine mounts and then the transmission. It sounds very much like you have a transmission fault. if the trans requires rebuilding it could be as much as $1500.00 lets hope its external to the trans, but do not leave it get it checked.
