I spent most the day messing with my 360 changed the motor oil, greased the suspension, changed the plugs and installed new wires and a new distributor cap. After changing the distributor cap the engine would no longer start. After calling the auto parts store and several friends, the only information I could find was the "firing order" but NOTHING about how the wires are actually supposed to be arranged on the distributor cap itself!
    .
Well to make a long story short after searching the internet I found this diagram. This was the perfect diagram I needed for arranging my wires on my distributor cap on my 360 engine in my 1976 Dodge Brougham Motorhome. Once I followed it, the engine fired right up. So now I am here posting a big THANK YOU!!!!

FIRING ORDERS

To avoid confusion, ALWAYS replace spark plug wires one at a time.

The most important thing to remember about the removal and installation of a distributor, cap or spark plug cable is that all wires MUST be labelled before they are disconnected. Keep in mind that these figures depict a firing order where the distributor cap terminals are relative to EACH OTHER only and they do not necessarily depict the tower positions in relation to the rest of the engine. This is true because any distributor which has been removed and reinstalled may have been installed with the No. 1 spark plug tower at any position (360 degrees) in relation to the rest of the motor, as long as the rotor aligned to the No. 1 tower when the No. 1 cylinder was at TDC of the compression stroke (valves closed, ready for the plug to fire). As long as the remaining wires were connected in the correct firing order sequence (depending on direction of distributor rotation) the engine will run. DO NOT EVER remove more than one wire from the distributor cap at a time unless you tag ALL wires and towers to assure proper installation.

1984 pontiac bonnerville plug firing order photo

Hi,
I don't know your engine size, but the link below is a picture of the GM small block firing order with distributor.
The firing order, which should be cast into the intake manifold, for the chevy small block V8 is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. The firing order is the numerical sequence in which the spark plugs are fired. The insertion position of each spark plug wire around the circumference of the distributor cap can be found according to a clock face. The insertion sequence determines the firing order. The firing order is followed clockwise around the distributor cap starting from the 6:30 position with the 6:30 position being the number one cylinder spark plug wire.

Need firing order and placement of first wire on cap

If you have the 3 cylinder engine, the firing order is 1/3/2. The distributor rotation is counter-clockwise looking at it from above, and the #1 spark plug wire goes on the distributor pin closest to the driver side fender.
If you have the 4 cylinder engine, the firing order is 1/3/4/2. The distributor rotation is also counter-clockwise, and the #1 wire goes on the distributor pin closest to the front passenger headlight.
Hope this helps!
