I have 1995 GMC Sierra with a 4.3L engine. It will not idle and will shut off unless you keep your foot on the gas. When driving and attempting to accelerate, it bogs down. We have changed fuel filter, oxygen sensor, plugs, distributor cap and rotor, checked fuel pump and still have the problem. The computer when tested gives the code 44 which says lean exhaust. We have tested and changed oxygen sensor. Any suggestions of what to check next?
Just a thought, have you checked yout TPS(throttle position sensor)? I had similar problems with my 89 GMC Jimmy 4.3l, however a code 44 is strange. Also check to see if your problems go away if you advance the timing a few degree's.

It sounds like the engines thermostat is stuck open, when you idle the engine has little air over the radiator so the heater will work, but when you are driving lots of air and the engine runs cold. I am sure you just need a new thermostat.
have you tried to start it with your foot on the gas about 30 %. My question is are you sure its not just a issue with maintaining an idle. This would indicate a bad idle air control valve. Unless you have some readings to go on like fuel pressure and data for the maf and various sensors all we can do is guess also. It may be you have a failed computer but without any testing or data its anyones guess.
You will need to look at the signal with a meter or scanner. Specs at Idle should be around 1v but always check your application to be sure. As you spin the throttle the voltage should be to where you can get every number just about till you get to about 4.5v at wide open The engine does not need to be on but the key has to be on. if you have any dropouts you could feel that while driving. Computer thinks your foot is off the gas and stops reduces fueling.
First, try a new accelerator pump. They're less than $10 and easy to install. On the side of the carburator, near the linkage. It's simple a small rubber diaphragm.
