If I turn ignition on/off several times the code P 1684 comes up. Please tell me what that means.  Seems to run OK otherwise.   Thanks for help.   Gene

My bmw has lost power and engine management light is on in my bmw 645ci

When the Engine Computer detects a problem, it sets a diagnostic fault code and turns the Check Engine light on to tell you. The place to start is by reading that code. Cycle the ignition switch three times within five seconds from "off" to "run" without cranking the engine, leave it in "run", then watch the code numbers show up in the odometer display. There's over a thousand potential fault codes but only those that could adversely affect emissions must turn the Check Engine light on. When the light is off the next time you start the engine, that means it's an intermittent problem and it has the second lowest level of severity. You still do not want to ignore it though because sometimes minor problems can become serious.

After heavy rain the check engine flush ,engine works but sheaky for 5 minutes and after works ok.but light on check engine is on allthe time.my car is mazda protage 2001

Hi wojtek,

Your check engine light is on to tell you that one or more of the many sytems and circuits monitored by your engine control computer is malfunctioning. when the Check Engine light is FLASHING this means that there is a SEVERE problem and that if you continue to operate the vehicle without fixing it, you will destroy some VERY EXPENSIVE parts like the catalytic converters or you may be causing severe engine damage.

NOBODY can tell you what is wrong without first scanning your engine control computer to retrieve fault codes to find out WHY it is turning the light on.

What does check engine code P-0455 and P-1684 mean?

P1684 - Battery Disconnected Within Last 50 Starts

P0455 - Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (no purge flow or large leak)
This indicates a fuel vapor leak or lack of purge flow in the EVAP control system. It means a large leak has been detected. The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle's fuel system. Fuel vapors are routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for storage. Later, when the engine is running a purge control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the engine.

Symptoms: You likely won't notice any drivability problems.

Causes: A code p0455 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:
A loose or improperly affixed gas cap
A non-conforming gas cap (i.e. not factory/original brand)
Other leak or damaged piece in EVAP system

Possible Solutions: With a p0455, the most common repair is to:
Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
Otherwise, replace the gas cap, and/or
Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses (you may hear a vacuum noise or smell fuel), repair if necessary

Test and check it. Hope this helps.

1684 is battery disconnected, which you caused when you disconnected it--you can ignore that. You probably have an intermittent misfire. Please follow my troubleshooting steps and let me know if you have questions.

Does the Check Engine light come ON when this happens? Whenever the "Check Engine" light comes on, there is always a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) stored in the ECM (Engine Control Module). You'll need an OBDII (On-Board-Diagnostics) scanner to retrieve any codes recorded/set in ECM. Once you do this and let us know what, if any codes are set, then we can go from there. What did the dealership tell you???? NO trouble Codes?

TRAC OFF light is on - what does that mean

There are different types of DTC's (diagnostic trouble codes) that modules can set and depending on the severity of the code it can turn on your check engine light. If the problem solves itself within a certain number of ignition cycles it will clear itself. If the code is coming and going it is probably severe enough to have it checked by a professional...Hope this helps!!

Engine management light comes on whilst driving

Go to a parts store and run a free diagnostic test. It will tell you the codes that have popped up and then you can fix it from there. That light means the computer is sensing a problem.
