If there is a check engine light, then the codes should be pulled off of it.

OBD-I Systems Fig. 1: Diagnostic trouble codes - 4.5L engine idle is running really fast - 84204010.jpg
Fig. 2: Diagnostic trouble codes - 4.9L engine 84204277.jpg
Fig. 3: Diagnostic trouble codes - 4.6L engine 84204442.jpg
Listings of the trouble codes for the various engine control systems covered in this manual are located in this section. Remember that a code only points to the faulty circuit NOT necessarily to a faulty component. Loose, damaged or corroded connections may contribute to a fault code on a circuit when the sensor or component is operating properly. Be sure that the components are faulty before replacing them, especially the expensive ones. The Assembly Line Diagnostic Link (ALDL) connector or Data Link Connector (DLC) may be located under the dash and sometimes covered with a plastic cover labeled DIAGNOSTIC CONNECTOR.

  1. On all 1990-95 models the diagnostic trouble codes can be read by grounding test terminal B. The terminal is most easily grounded by connecting it to terminal A (internal ECM ground). This is the terminal to the right of terminal B on the top row of the ALDL connector.
  2. Once the terminals have been connected, the ignition switch must be moved to the ON position with the engine not running.
  3. The Service Engine Soon or Check Engine light should be flashing. If it isn't, turn the ignition OFF and remove the jumper wire. Turn the ignition ON and confirm that light is now on. If it is not, replace the bulb and try again. If the bulb still will not light, or if it does not flash with the test terminal grounded, the system should be diagnosed by an experienced driveability technician. If the light is OK, proceed as follows.
  4. The code(s) stored in memory may be read through counting the flashes of the dashboard warning lamp. The dash warning lamp should begin to flash Code 12. The code will display as one flash, a pause and two flashes. Code 12 is not a fault code. It is used as a system acknowledgment or handshake code; its presence indicates that the PCM can communicate as requested. Code 12 is used to begin every diagnostic sequence. Some vehicles also use Code 12 after all diagnostic codes have been sent.
  5. After Code 12 has been transmitted 3 times, the fault codes, if any, will each be transmitted 3 times. The codes are stored and transmitted in numeric order from lowest to highest. NOTE: The order of codes in the memory does not indicate the order of occurrence.
  6. If there are no codes stored, but a driveability or emissions problem is evident, the system should be diagnosed by an experienced driveability technician.
  7. If one or more codes are stored, record them. Refer to the applicable Diagnostic Code chart in this section.
  8. Switch the ignition OFF when finished with code retrieval or scan tool readings. NOTE: After making repairs, clear the trouble codes and operate the vehicle to see if it will reset, indicating further problems.

Why does the voltage go down & all warning dash lights come on when I turn on headlights & heater in my 2001 cavalier?

My first guess would be the alternator is weak and not able to handle the extra demand. The engine should idle with the warning lights off even with the heater and headlights on.

Hi guys...my yaris is running rich, has poor gas mileage (360km on a full tank). and very slow and choppy idle (idles like a really old car) these are the things i have done so far : change air and fu

Do the following:
1. Clean the throttle body from inside.
2. Adjust the spark plugs gap to 1.00 mm.
3. Check fuel pump pressure. (44 Psi - 49 psi)
4. Remove the negative battery terminal for 5 minutes.
5. Connect the battery terminal.
6. Check the engine oil level and coolant level.
NOTE: Before starting the engine shut off all lights and loads for example room light, blower, radio, parking light etc.
7. Start the engine and hold the throttle at 3000 rpm till radiator fan comes on.
8. After the fan comes on release the throttle pedal and let it idle for 10 minutes.

How to check the radiator fan in the engine for x type 2.5 2003

While idling in park, turn the airconditioning system on high (make sure the "snowflake" light is green on the climate control panel). This will cause the cars engine managment computer to turn the cooling fan to the high, or fast speed (this is so the a/c condensor can properly cool the refrigerant). If the fan does not come on when you do that, there is a problem.

Heater or ac wont blow air in my 2003 ford escort zx2. heat comes out when the heater is on and i am driving fast? is it the blower fan? where would i locate it at?

Try unhooking one of the battery cables and leave it off for at least 20 minutes. When you hook it back up the

computers should re-boot. That has solved problems for me with heater, interior lites, power windows, AC, day

time running lites, power mirrors, fast idle, rough or slow shifting, CD player, and wipers on GM autos and S-10

PU and Dodge trucks. None of the switches are connected to the device they control anymore. The switch tells the

computer to open the window and the computer sends a signal to the window motor. When the computer gets

confused strange things will happen or not happen. Things like one headlight stays off etc. I actually had to do it

twice on my Bonneville because the first time the AC blower would only work in low and medium. After the second

re-boot, everything was fine. Of course you may have to re-set your radio stations.

If that doesn't work, check the fuses.

Engine idle speed too fast some times. idle speed

Three things to check for:

1) High idle switch is on..*(vehicle thinks AC is running but it isn't.
You can try turning on the AC and see if the engine slows down to confirm this one.

2) Sticking or worn out Idle Air Control or IAC, You might get a check engine light with this one.....you might not if it's a mechanical failure.

3) Simplest of all. A vacuum leak. You can get the engine vacuum read while running if you go to a mechanic with a vacuum guage or an OBD 2 ecu code reader. There should be specs on what vacuum levels are normal for you car at idle.

Good luck and be careful!

Cooling problems

It sounds like everything is working properly. The temperature will go up when idling. The wter isn't being pumped through the system as fast. When idling, the engine runs at around 750 rpm's. When driving, even at low speeds, the engine speed is at least double that. Make sure your antifreeze is set for at least 20° below zero.

Too fast idle running speed.

Typical idle for this motor is right around the amount you have described. Check to see if any check engine lights are on, or if the ABS light is on. A typical issue with this motor is the OVP relay that when not operating properly causes the engine to rev much too high (~1500-2000). Also do your revs drop significantly when you put the car into gear? If not then there really isnt an issue. When the motor is idling too high and you stick it into gear the car will typically lurch really hard.
