Does the 2003 Mitsubishi Galant have a separate filter and fuel pump or do you have to replace both in order to replace one?

Check for pressure at the back of the filter. If pressure is there, check after the filter. If no pressure before the filter, replace pump. If there is pressure before but not after the filter, replace filter.

This pump is in the fuel tank. Drop down fuel tank,remove wiring and hoses then unscrew the main cap which the fuel pump is attached too. when it is withdrawn from the tank the fuel pump is the long round object.

It could really be either. The filter is the cheapest to replace (Usually around $20) and according to Mitsubishi should be replaced every 40,000 miles or so. I would replace the fuel filter any day of the week before going into replacing the pump. Hope this helps you.

YEP FUEL FILTER IS PART OF FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY YOU HAVE TO REMOVE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY IN ORDER TO REPLACE FUEL FILTER.HARD TO START PROBLEM COULD BE DIRTY LEAKING FUEL INJECTORS OR FOULED OUT SPARK PLUGS.

No, Fuel pump is somthing that is a fix when broken kinda thing. I would however suggest a fuel filter and fuel injection cleaning

Yes, it has a fuel filter, and if after you replace it you still have trouble, you might want to do a series of tests.

1. Check that you actually have power to the fuel pump. You can do this by taking the plug off the fuel pump and, turning the key to the on position, testing the plug with a volt meter.
2. Prime the fuel rail. There's a bolt in the rail that will let the air out when twisted.
3. Have the fuel injectors cleaned.
4. Check for blown fuses.

The problem with fuel is that there are many sensors that can trigger the computer to shut down fuel system. For instance, some models will shut down the fuel system if there is low oil pressure to save the engine. If all else fails, taking the car to a mechanic may be the only thing you can do.
