Hi. I have a high mileage 96 ford contour. drives very nice. but last week for the first time ever, after i was out driving for half hour, the engine suddenly reved (as if it slipped from gear) and then there the car shot forward as it made loud clunk noise. I was almost home and it did not do it again that day. next day i had only small errands in low speed limit areas and had no problems. i stopped and had transmission fluid changed. ran fine afterward. but today, again after half hour driving, it repeats the same rev, lunge clunk sequence. Ideas?

Did you check the transmission fluid again. You could have a major leak. Or reving the car up so high it started to burn the clutches in your transmission, resulting in replacing the transmission. Always check the fluid. A few dollars for fluid is better than 1500 bucks for a new tranny

SOURCE: something slipping in transmission ford contour 1999

it depends on the trans but ford had alot of problems with though years with the overdrive shift kit it is a band in the trans and it pop out and break you need to take to local trans shop and let them look at it and tell them the problem and they will take the trans out and crack it up and replace the part that need to be replace before you have to replace the whole trans the ford dealerships dont have the best trans people hate to say that but it true take to someone who specialize in trans only

Battery light on no powersteering on my 96 ford contour

Sounds like the serpentine accessory drive belt on the engine is either broken or has come off. It drives the alternator and power steering pump, as well as the air conditioning compressor and (depending on the engine) the engine coolant pump. Check the belt (it's on the right, or passenger, side of the engine, between the engine and the fender) and replace it if needed. Also, check all the pulleys that it gos over to make sure they aren't loose. There should be a diagram under the hood of your car that shows how the belt goes on.

It sounds more like the fuel pump to me, if you don't hear the pump when you turn the ignition to the on position, that's the problem, check to make sure the fuse and the fuel pump relay are still good before you change the pump.

Coolant sensor may be the problem. It is located near the thermostat housing. It may be sticking between modes & not operating properly. Also make sure coolant is circulating in system.
