Cruise control Turns off intermittantly

I bought this jeep yesterday. The cruise control turns off when I try to set the speed. It then will not come back on unless I turn off the Jeep and start it back up. It worked for a day and then just started doing this.. I don't believe it is vacuum related, I think it is Cruise switch related.. But I wanted to throw it out there and see what you guys thought.

I am at the 75,000 mile mark on my 2006 Laredo and I just began having this problem. The description is accurate. Briefly before I had this problem, when I tried to set the cruise speed and let off the accelerator, the car would speed up and I would press on the brakes when it got to about 10 MPH over my set point. It would only take a couple seconds for this to happen as the Jeep would accelerate quickly. This happened 2/3 times before it just stopped working all together.

SOURCE: Cruise control Turns off intermittantly

You're probably not gonna like this answer, but hwen it comes to electrical problems, you really do need to take it to a garage/mechainc that you trust.

I know I couldn't talk you through what you need to do to fix it, especailly with the Jeep not right in front of me.

If you bought the Jeep from a dealer, take it back there right now, and tell them the cruise troubles you're having...most dealers will fix the problem even on aused car because they want the good news to travel that they took care of you.......they don't want anyone walking around with bad things to say about them.

Good Luck, let us know what ahppens, okay?

SOURCE: my cruise control will suddenly stop working and the cruise light

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be the brake fluid level. This may be an answer. Also have you had the brakes checked. The cruise control is integrated with the brakes. Any little thing wrong with them effects the cruise.

2009 Jeep Compass CDR 2.0 Limited - Cruise control only works when engine is cold

Most of the time this is caused by a bad brake switch. If the switch is shorting out, then it will cause the computer to think that the brakes are being applied, which turns off the cruise control. If the switch is fine, then it may have a bad speed sensor or the cruise control switch itself is bad.

Which engine ?
Cruise Control Description and Operation (3.6L)
Cruise Control Description and Operation (3.4L)

Do you know what all is involved in C.C. operation ?

Cruise control is a speed control system that maintains a desired vehicle speed under normal driving conditions at speeds above 40km/h (25 mph). However, steep grades may cause variations in the selected speeds. The main components of the cruise control system are:
• The cruise control module assembly
• The cruise control switches
• The cruise control release switch
• The powertrain control module (PCM)
• The stoplamp switch assembly
• The vehicle speed sensor

The cruise control module controls the operation of the cruise control system. The cruise control module monitors the signal circuits of the cruise control switches. When the normally open cruise On/Off switch closes with a switch activation, the cruise control modules detects a high voltage on the signal circuit. The cruise control module activates the cruise control system. The set/coast switch and the resume/accel switch will not operate the system when the cruise control module has not activated the system based on the cruise control on/off switch signal circuit .
The cruise control module monitors the cruise control set/coast switch in order to determine when to capture and maintain the vehicle speed. The cruise control module monitors the vehicle speed signal circuit in order to determine the desired speed. The PCM pulses the vehicle speed signal circuit at 4000 pulses per minute. After an initial set speed has been established, the cruise control module also uses the cruise control set/coast switch signal circuit in order to tap down the set speed when the cruise control module detects a switch activation.
The cruise control module monitors the cruise control resume/accel switch signal circuit in order to determine when to resume the previous set speed. This feature only works within the same ignition cycle and as long as the cruise wasn't turned off using the cruise control On/Off switch since the last cruise engagement. After the set speed has been resumed, the cruise control module also uses the cruise control resume/accel switch signal circuit in order to tap up the set speed when the cruise control module detects a switch activation.
The cruise control module assembly has a controller and an electric stepper motor to vary the throttle in each different cruise control mode. Two components in the module assembly help to do this. The electronic controller and the electric stepper motor. The controller monitors vehicle speed and operates the stepper motor. The stepper motor operates in response to the controller, to maintain the desired cruise speed. The electric stepper motor moves a strap that is attached to the cruise control cable which moves the throttle

How do you activate the cruise control on a Mercedes ML 270 cdi.

If you know how to set your speed limiter. To set your cruise control, press the stalk in (to the right). The orange light on your dash should go out and you're ready to set your cruise control. You can start the cruise control by either moving the cruise control stalk up or down. Once you start the cruise control you can move the stalk up or down to increase or decrease your cruise speed. You can move it toward you to shut off the cruise control. You can press it in again to go back to the speed limiter. I hope this helps.

Have a problem with intermittent cruise control on my 2007 Honda Civci Sedan. Took it to the dealer 2x, still have issues. "Main Cruise Control" lit on dash but cruise control intermittently will not...

cruise control operation is reliant on the following
road speed sensor ( speedo or VSS sensor )
engine rpms tacho/ ignition coil/module problem
clutch pedal sensor (VSS in automatic )
gear selection position sensor ( not properly adjusted causing flickering of the selector light)
brake pedal sensor
bad ground wire connections
r all need to work together or the CC will stop working
nothing to do with vents and all that you mentioned.
wire connections and harness connections for the transmission are suspect
CC will not operate under certain engine rpms and road speed

Location of the cruise control fuse in a 1995 jeep cherokee

Check this out also...the schematic is too small to see which fuse it is in the engine compartment Power Distribution Center (the fuse box). Is your cruise control not working?

Cruise Control The Cruise Command system is electrically actuated and vacuum operated. The turn signal lever on the steering column incorporates a slide switch which has three positions OFF, ON or RESUME. A SET button is located in the end of the lever. This device is designed to operate at speeds above approximately 35 mph (56 km/h).
The speed control module automatically controls throttle position to maintain a speed set by the operator. The vehicle will keep the set speed unless the driver presses the brake, clutch or accelerator pedal.

I have a 2008 Honda CRV and for the life of me I cannot engage the Cruise control- I press the Cruise Button on the right of the steer wheel and nothing happens - nothing Help anyone ? Tks Nancy

The cruise-controls have 2-buttons that must be activated before it gets the car going when you remove your foot off the gas-pedal.
The cruise button is essentailly a switch that turns 'on' the cruise servo-motor that tells the sytems that you wants to use it, so it gets ready.
There are other three switches on the right-side of the steering wheel namely: resume accel; cancel; set decel.
To get your car to cruise: you must steady your speed and foot on the gas-pedal. You cannot just press the switches and expect the car to cruise. It takes about two-to-three seconds for the system to respond to a set cruising speed.
How to do it: accelerate to a speed of about 30-mph. Press the 'cruise' button on the dash first. Next you press 'set decel' button. This will turn 'on' the cruise control light on the instrument panel. Then wait a second or three and you would feel the cruise engagement. Any touch on the brake pedal will slow down the car and turns the cruise off. The 'cancel' button turns off the cruise light on the instrument panel.
If you hit the brake-pedal at any time for any reason, and you would like to continue cruising again, simply press the 'resume accel' button.
The cruise system works in conjunction with the braking system of the car. So all major parts of the braking system must be in good condition, otherwise the cruise system could shut off itself.
