You need a Torx head screwdriver T25. Open the door and on the side of the door is a small black grommet, remove grommet, inside is the torx screw you need to loosen for the lock mechanism to move. you dont need to remove the screw just loosen enough to move the lock assembly around. Once loose enough, install the door handle and tighten lock assembly back and put grommet back.
Here is a picture if you need a bit of visual clues.

There is a very long and detailed post here; http://forums.nicoclub.com/door-handle-fell-off-what-the-t459668.html
these instructions also include a modification to prevent the door handle from getting loose and falling off in the future.
T27 would be better
SOURCE: replace exterior door handle
On most vehicles it has to be done with the door panel off and with the window up. The door panel is usually the hardest part, you have to pry out the fasteners with out ripping them out of the hardboard backing, you can get a door panel tool at most auto parts stores.
If you can, it is easiest (But it is kinda cheating) to go out to a wrecking yard and try to get the replacement first, that way you can get a chance to "practice" taking your door panel off without hurting anything expensive. You might also find one already apart and easier accessable. As you take the replacement out, take notes or pictures if you have to to remember the order of things. there will be lock and door linkage attatched, best to get all of the fasteners and clips around them and what ever else that looks neccassary. You do not want to go back for them if you find out you need them later and most places will not charge you for them anyway.
