Just took it for a ride about 5 miles and after it really got warmed up, the light went out by itself. There is supposed to be a float in the oil pan that senses when it is low, and my thought is changing the oil when the temperature is below freezing, the float stuck on the side when the oil was drained. After it got up to normal temperature it must have freed itself.

Hope helps.

Why does 'maintenance required' light flash 8 times then out?

That light simply means that it is nearing the point for maintenance which is based on the odometer. The mechanic was supposed to reset that after the oil change.

How to reset maintanence light

You need an OBDII scanner that will find the code and the option to reset the code. If the code (meaning maintenance light) comes back on then you need to get it fixed. AWD cars/crossovers/etch. Have a TON of electronics and extra components like electronic locking differentials or mechanical (nickname is "diff" ) diffs
. On the Outback the system is on all the time, and it has a Haldex differential that sends more power to the wheels with grip. There are a ton of things that can go wrong with a complex system.... but the main cause is electronic in nature. Also, simple things like replacing 2 tires and having the other two nearly bald will cues the wheels to rotate at slightly different speeds. The system can't handle that friction and stress for long and you can blow the AWD system mechanically.. All tires must be replaced at the same time or very, very nearly the same time. Go to AutoZone and they will check that light for you for free, and may even reset it for free or nearly free low-bucks. Good Luck. The Outback is a great car and will last a long time if you take care of her! -Chris

Maintenance Required light

You need to plug an OBDII scanner into the vehicle's port for the scanner. It will give you the various codes, which you can look up online for your vehicle. Some auto parts stores, (Auto Zone) do this for free so you do not have to buy a $250.00 scanner.

1997 subaru outback "check engine light" on for 6 months

try disconnecting the + positive terminal for a few minutes and see if it goes out most likely the 02 sensor needs replacing ...however low fluid levels may also contribute to this oil, brake fluid etc.
